Chapter 89

42You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries; You have made all his enemies rejoice. 43You also turn back the edge of his sword, And have not made him stand in battle. 44You have put an end to his splendor And cast his throne to the ground. 45You have shortened the days of his youth; You have covered him with shame. Selah 46How long, Lord? Will You hide Yourself forever? Will Your wrath burn like fire? 47Remember what my lifespan is; For what futility You have created all the sons of mankind! 48What man can live and not see death? Can he save his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah 49Where are Your former acts of favor, Lord, Which You swore to David in Your faithfulness? 50Remember, Lord, the taunt against Your servants; How I carry in my heart the taunts of all the many peoples, 51With which Your enemies have taunted, Lord, With which they have taunted the footsteps of Your anointed.

42Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice.
43Thou hast also turned the edge of his sword, and hast not made him to stand in the battle.
44Thou hast made his glory to cease, and cast his throne down to the ground.
45The days of his youth hast thou shortened: thou hast covered him with shame. Selah.
46How long, Lord? wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire?
47Remember how short my time is: wherefore hast thou made all men in vain?
48What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah.
49Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, which thou swarest unto David in thy truth?
50Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy servants; how I do bear in my bosom the reproach of all the mighty people;
51Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O Lord; wherewith they have reproached the footsteps of thine anointed.

48What courageous person can live and never see death? Who can save himself from the power of Sheol? Selah 49Lord, where are the former acts of your faithful love that you swore to David in your faithfulness? 50Remember, Lord, the ridicule against your servants— in my heart I carry abuse from all the peoples—
51how your enemies have ridiculed, Lord, how they have ridiculed every step of your anointed.

42You have strengthened his enemies and made them all rejoice. 43You have made his sword useless and refused to help him in battle. 44You have ended his splendor and overturned his throne.
45You have made him old before his time and publicly disgraced him. Interlude
46O Lord, how long will this go on? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your anger burn like fire? 47Remember how short my life is, how empty and futile this human existence!
48No one can live forever; all will die. No one can escape the power of the grave. Interlude
49Lord, where is your unfailing love? You promised it to David with a faithful pledge. 50Consider, Lord, how your servants are disgraced! I carry in my heart the insults of so many people. 51Your enemies have mocked me, O Lord; they mock your anointed king wherever he goes.
