Chapter 107

4They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region; They did not find a way to an inhabited city. 5 They were hungry and thirsty; Their souls felt weak within them. 6Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble; He saved them from their distresses. 7He also had them walk on a straight way, To go to an inhabited city. 8They shall give thanks to the Lord for His mercy, And for His wonders to the sons of mankind! 9For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, And He has filled the hungry soul with what is good. 10There were those who lived in darkness and in the shadow of death, Prisoners in misery and chains, 11Because they had rebelled against the words of God And rejected the plan of the Most High. 12Therefore He humbled their heart with labor; They stumbled and there was no one to help. 13Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble; He saved them from their distresses. 14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death And broke their bands apart. 15They shall give thanks to the Lord for His mercy, And for His wonders to the sons of mankind! 16For He has shattered gates of bronze And cut off bars of iron. 17Fools, because of their rebellious way, And because of their guilty deeds, were afflicted. 18Their souls loathed all kinds of food, And they came close to the gates of death. 19Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble; He saved them from their distresses. 20He sent His word and healed them, And saved them from their destruction. 21They shall give thanks to the Lord for His mercy, And for His wonders to the sons of mankind! 22They shall also offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, And tell of His works with joyful singing. 23Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters; 24They have seen the works of the Lord, And His wonders in the deep. 25For He spoke and raised a stormy wind, Which lifted the waves of the sea. 26They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; Their soul melted away in their misery. 27They reeled and staggered like a drunken person, And were at their wits’ end. 28Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. 29He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed. 30Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired harbor. 31They shall give thanks to the Lord for His mercy, And for His wonders to the sons of mankind! 32They shall also exalt Him in the congregation of the people, And praise Him at the seat of the elders. 33He turns rivers into a wilderness, And springs of water into a thirsty ground; 34 And a fruitful land into a salt waste, Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it. 35He turns a wilderness into a pool of water, And a dry land into springs of water; 36And He has the hungry live there, So that they may establish an inhabited city, 37And sow fields and plant vineyards, And gather a fruitful harvest. 38He also blesses them and they multiply greatly, And He does not let their cattle decrease. 39When they become few and lowly Because of oppression, misery, and sorrow, 40He pours contempt upon noblemen And makes them wander in a pathless wasteland. 41But He sets the needy securely on high, away from affliction, And makes his families like a flock. 42The upright see it and are glad; But all injustice shuts its mouth. 43Who is wise? He is to pay attention to these things, And consider the mercy of the Lord.

Chapter 107

4Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; 5hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. 6Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. 7He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. 8Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! 9For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things. 10Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons, 11for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High. 12So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help. 13Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. 14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart. 15Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! 16For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron. 17Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction; 18they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. 19Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. 20He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. 21Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! 22And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy! 23Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters; 24they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep. 25For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. 26They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; 27they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end. 28Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. 29He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. 30Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. 31Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! 32Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. 33He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, 34a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants. 35He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. 36And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in; 37they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield. 38By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish. 39When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow, 40he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes; 41but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks. 42The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth. 43Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD.

Chapter 107

4They wandered in the wilderness in a desolate way; They found no city to dwell in. 5Hungry and thirsty, Their soul fainted in them. 6 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, And He delivered them out of their distresses. 7And He led them forth by the right way, That they might go to a city for a dwelling place. 8 Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! 9For He satisfies the longing soul, And fills the hungry soul with goodness. 10Those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, Bound in affliction and irons— 11Because they rebelled against the words of God, And despised the counsel of the Most High, 12Therefore He brought down their heart with labor; They fell down, and there was none to help. 13Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, And He saved them out of their distresses. 14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, And broke their chains in pieces. 15Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! 16For He has broken the gates of bronze, And cut the bars of iron in two. 17Fools, because of their transgression, And because of their iniquities, were afflicted. 18 Their soul abhorred all manner of food, And they drew near to the gates of death. 19Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, And He saved them out of their distresses. 20 He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions. 21Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! 22 Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, And declare His works with rejoicing. 23Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters, 24They see the works of the Lord, And His wonders in the deep. 25For He commands and raises the stormy wind, Which lifts up the waves of the sea. 26They mount up to the heavens, They go down again to the depths; Their soul melts because of trouble. 27They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, And are at their wits’ end. 28Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble, And He brings them out of their distresses. 29 He calms the storm, So that its waves are still. 30Then they are glad because they are quiet; So He guides them to their desired haven. 31 Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! 32Let them exalt Him also in the assembly of the people, And praise Him in the company of the elders. 33He turns rivers into a wilderness, And the watersprings into dry ground; 34A fruitful land into barrenness, For the wickedness of those who dwell in it. 35 He turns a wilderness into pools of water, And dry land into watersprings. 36There He makes the hungry dwell, That they may establish a city for a dwelling place, 37And sow fields and plant vineyards, That they may yield a fruitful harvest. 38 He also blesses them, and they multiply greatly; And He does not let their cattle decrease. 39When they are diminished and brought low Through oppression, affliction, and sorrow, 40 He pours contempt on princes, And causes them to wander in the wilderness where there is no way; 41 Yet He sets the poor on high, far from affliction, And makes their families like a flock. 42 The righteous see it and rejoice, And all iniquity stops its mouth. 43 Whoever is wise will observe these things, And they will understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.
