Chapter 8
1But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2And early in the morning He came again into the temple area, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began teaching them. 3Now the scribes and the Pharisees *brought a woman caught in the act of adultery, and after placing her in the center of the courtyard, 4they *said to Him, 'Teacher, this woman has been caught in the very act of committing adultery. 5Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?' 6Now they were saying this to test Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. 7When they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up and said to them, 'He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.' 8And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9Now when they heard this, they began leaving, one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman where she was, in the center of the courtyard. 10And straightening up, Jesus said to her, 'Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?' 11She said, 'No one, Lord.' And Jesus said, 'I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on do not sin any longer.']]
12Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, 'I am the Light of the world; the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.'
13So the Pharisees said to Him, 'You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not true.'
14Jesus answered and said to them, 'Even if I am testifying about Myself, My testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
15You judge according to the flesh; I am not judging anyone.
16But even if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me.
17Even in your Law it has been written that the testimony of two people is true.
18I am He who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.'
19So they were saying to Him, 'Where is Your Father?' Jesus answered, 'You know neither Me nor My Father; if you knew Me, you would know My Father also.'
20These words He spoke in the treasury, as He taught in the temple area; and no one arrested Him, because His hour had not yet come.
21Then He said again to them, 'I am going away, and you will look for Me, and will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.'
22So the Jews were saying, 'Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?'
23And He was saying to them, 'You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world.
24Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am, you will die in your sins.'
25Then they were saying to Him, 'Who are You?' Jesus said to them, 'What have I even been saying to you from the beginning?
26I have many things to say and to judge regarding you, but He who sent Me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I say to the world.'
27They did not realize that He was speaking to them about the Father.
28So Jesus said, 'When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am, and I do nothing on My own, but I say these things as the Father instructed Me.
29And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.'
30As He said these things, many came to believe in Him.
31So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, 'If you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples;
32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'
33They answered Him, 'We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?'
34Jesus answered them, 'Truly, truly I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.
35Now the slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever.
36So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.
37I know that you are Abraham’s descendants; yet you are seeking to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.
38I speak of the things which I have seen with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father.'
39They answered and said to Him, 'Abraham is our father.' Jesus *said to them, 'If you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham.
40But as it is, you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do.
41You are doing the deeds of your father.' They said to Him, 'We were not born as a result of sexual immorality; we have one Father: God.'
42Jesus said to them, 'If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I came forth from God and am here; for I have not even come on My own, but He sent Me.
43Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot listen to My word.
44You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.
45But because I say the truth, you do not believe Me.
46Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me?
47The one who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.'
48The Jews answered and said to Him, 'Do we not rightly say that You are a Samaritan, and You have a demon?'
49Jesus answered, 'I do not have a demon; on the contrary, I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.
50But I am not seeking My glory; there is One who seeks it, and judges.
51Truly, truly I say to you, if anyone follows My word, he will never see death.'
52The Jews said to Him, 'Now we know that You have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets as well; and yet You say, ‘If anyone follows My word, he will never taste of death.’
53You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died, are You? The prophets died too. Whom do You make Yourself out to be?'
54Jesus answered, 'If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God’;
55and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him. And if I say that I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you; but I do know Him, and I follow His word.
56Your father Abraham was overjoyed that he would see My day, and he saw it and rejoiced.'
57So the Jews said to Him, 'You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?'
58Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.'
59Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and left the temple grounds.
Chapter 9
1As Jesus passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from birth. 2And His disciples asked Him, 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?' 3Jesus answered, 'It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4We must carry out the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.' 6When He had said this, He spit on the ground, and made mud from the saliva, and applied the mud to his eyes, 7and said to him, 'Go, wash in the pool of Siloam' (which is translated, Sent). So he left and washed, and came back seeing. 8So the neighbors, and those who previously saw him as a beggar, were saying, 'Is this not the one who used to sit and beg?' 9Others were saying, 'This is he,' still others were saying, 'No, but he is like him.' The man himself kept saying, 'I am the one.' 10So they were saying to him, 'How then were your eyes opened?' 11He answered, 'The man who is called Jesus made mud, and spread it on my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash’; so I went away and washed, and I received sight.' 12And they said to him, 'Where is He?' He *said, 'I do not know.'
13They *brought the man who was previously blind to the Pharisees.
14Now it was a Sabbath on the day that Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.
15Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, 'He applied mud to my eyes, and I washed, and I see.'
16Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, 'This man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.' But others were saying, 'How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?' And there was dissension among them.
17So they *said again to the man who was blind, 'What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?' And he said, 'He is a prophet.'
18The Jews then did not believe it about him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight,
19and they questioned them, saying, 'Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?'
20His parents then answered and said, 'We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;
21but how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself.'
22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already reached the decision that if anyone confessed Him to be Christ, he was to be excommunicated from the synagogue.
23It was for this reason that his parents said, 'He is of age; ask him.'
24So for a second time they summoned the man who had been blind, and said to him, 'Give glory to God; we know that this man is a sinner.'
25He then answered, 'Whether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.'
26So they said to him, 'What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?'
27He answered them, 'I told you already and you did not listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?'
28They spoke abusively to him and said, 'You are His disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.
29We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where He is from.'
30The man answered and said to them, 'Well, here is the amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes!
31We know that God does not listen to sinners; but if someone is God-fearing and does His will, He listens to him.
32Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.
33If this man were not from God, He could do nothing.'
34They answered him, 'You were born entirely in sins, and yet you are teaching us?' So they put him out.
35Jesus heard that they had put him out, and upon finding him, He said, 'Do you believe in the Son of Man?'
36He answered by saying, 'And who is He, Sir, that I may believe in Him?'
37Jesus said to him, 'You have both seen Him, and He is the one who is talking with you.'
38And he said, 'I believe, Lord.' And he worshiped Him.
39And Jesus said, 'For judgment I came into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.'
40Those who were with Him from the Pharisees heard these things and said to Him, 'We are not blind too, are we?'
41Jesus said to them, 'If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now that you maintain, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.
Chapter 10
1Truly, truly I say to you, the one who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber. 2But the one who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. 3To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep listen to his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he puts all his own sheep outside, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5However, a stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.' 6Jesus told them this figure of speech, but they did not understand what the things which He was saying to them meant.
7So Jesus said to them again, 'Truly, truly I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.
8All those who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
9I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they would have life, and have it abundantly.
11I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.
12He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf snatches them and scatters the flock.
13He flees because he is a hired hand and does not care about the sheep.
14I am the good shepherd, and I know My own, and My own know Me,
15just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.
16And I have other sheep that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will listen to My voice; and they will become one flock, with one shepherd.
17For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it back.
18No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it back. This commandment I received from My Father.'
19Dissension occurred again among the Jews because of these words.
20Many of them were saying, 'He has a demon and is insane. Why do you listen to Him?'
21Others were saying, 'These are not the words of one who is demon-possessed. A demon cannot open the eyes of those who are blind, can it?'
22At that time the Feast of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem;
23it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple area, in the portico of Solomon.
24The Jews then surrounded Him and began saying to Him, 'How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.'
25Jesus answered them, 'I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of Me.
26But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep.
27My sheep listen to My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;
28and I give them eternal life, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.
29My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
30I and the Father are one.'
31The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him.
32Jesus replied to them, 'I showed you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?'
33The Jews answered Him, 'We are not stoning You for a good work, but for blasphemy; and because You, being a man, make Yourself out to be God.'
34Jesus answered them, 'Has it not been written in your Law: ‘I SAID, YOU ARE GodS’?
35If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be nullified),
36are you saying of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?
37If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me;
38but if I do them, even though you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.'
39Therefore they were seeking again to arrest Him, and He eluded their grasp.
40And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He stayed there.
41Many came to Him and were saying, 'While John performed no sign, yet everything John said about this man was true.'
42And many believed in Him there.
Chapter 11
1Now a certain man was sick: Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2And it was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, 'Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.' 4But when Jesus heard this, He said, 'This sickness is not meant for death, but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.' 5(Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister, and Lazarus.) 6So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was. 7Then after this He *said to the disciples, 'Let’s go to Judea again.' 8The disciples *said to Him, 'Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone You, and yet You are going there again?' 9Jesus replied, 'Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10But if anyone walks during the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.' 11This He said, and after this He *said to them, 'Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going so that I may awaken him from sleep.' 12The disciples then said to Him, 'Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will come out of it.' 13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about actual sleep. 14So Jesus then said to them plainly, 'Lazarus died, 15and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let’s go to him.' 16Therefore Thomas, who was called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, 'Let’s also go, so that we may die with Him!'
17So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.
18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away;
19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them about their brother.
20So then Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but Mary stayed in the house.
21Martha then said to Jesus, 'Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.
22Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.'
23Jesus *said to her, 'Your brother will rise from the dead.'
24Martha *said to Him, 'I know that he will rise in the resurrection on the last day.'
25Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life; the one who believes in Me will live, even if he dies,
26and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?'
27She *said to Him, 'Yes, Lord; I have come to believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, and He who comes into the world.'
28When she had said this, she left and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, 'The Teacher is here and is calling for you.'
29And when she heard this, she *got up quickly and came to Him.
30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha met Him.
31Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw that Mary had gotten up quickly and left, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
32So when Mary came to the place where Jesus was, she saw Him and fell at His feet, saying to Him, 'Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.'
33Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled,
34and He said, 'Where have you laid him?' They *said to Him, 'Lord, come and see.'
35Jesus wept.
36So the Jews were saying, 'See how He loved him!'
37But some of them said, 'Could this man, who opened the eyes of the man who was blind, not have also kept this man from dying?'
38So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, *came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.
39Jesus *said, 'Remove the stone.' Martha, the sister of the deceased, *said to Him, 'Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days.'
40Jesus *said to her, 'Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?'
41So they removed the stone. And Jesus raised His eyes, and said, 'Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
42But I knew that You always hear Me; nevertheless, because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.'
43And when He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'
44Out came the man who had died, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus *said to them, 'Unbind him, and let him go.'
45Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary, and saw what He had done, believed in Him.
46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.
47Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council meeting, and they were saying, 'What are we doing in regard to the fact that this man is performing many signs?
48If we let Him go on like this, all the people will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take over both our place and our nation.'
49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, 'You know nothing at all,
50nor are you taking into account that it is in your best interest that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish instead.'
51Now he did not say this on his own, but as he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation;
52and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
53So from that day on they planned together to kill Him.
55Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the country prior to the Passover, in order to purify themselves.
56So they were looking for Jesus, and saying to one another as they stood in the temple area, 'What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?'
57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might arrest Him.

Chapter 8
1Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. 2And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. 3And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, 4They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. 5Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? 6This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. 7So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. 8And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. 9And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers hath no man condemned thee 11She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
12Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
13The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.
14Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.
15Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
16And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
17It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.
18I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
19Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.
21Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.
22Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.
23And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
24I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
25Then said they unto him, Who art thou And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.
26I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.
27They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
28Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.
29And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
30As he spake these words, many believed on him.
34Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
37I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
38I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
40But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
41Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
42Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
43Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
45And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
46Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
47He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
48Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
49Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.
50And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
51Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
52Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.
53Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
54Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
55Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.
56Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
57Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
59Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
Chapter 9
1And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. 2And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? 3Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. 4I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. 5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. 6When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, 7And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. 8The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? 9Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he. 10Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened? 11He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight. 12Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.
13They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.
14And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.
15Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.
16Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
17They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
18But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.
19And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?
20His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:
21But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.
22These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.
23Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.
24Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.
25He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
26Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?
27He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
28Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.
29We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.
30The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.
31Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
32Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.
33If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.
34They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
35Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God
36He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?
37And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
38And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
39And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
40And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
41Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
Chapter 10
1Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. 4And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. 5And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. 6This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.
7Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.
8All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.
9I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
10The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
11I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
12But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.
13The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.
14I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
15As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
16And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
17Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
18No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
19There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings.
20And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him?
21Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?
22And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.
23And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.
24Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.
25Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.
26But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.
27My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
28And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
29My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
31Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
32Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me
33The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
34Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods
35If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
36Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?
37If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.
38But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.
39Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand,
40And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode.
41And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true.
42And many believed on him there.
Chapter 11
1Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. 2It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) 3Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. 4When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. 5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 6When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. 7Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. 8His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
9Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
10But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
11These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
12Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
15And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
16Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
17Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
18Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
19And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
21Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

24Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

51And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

Chapter 8
1But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
3Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, making her stand in the center.
4"Teacher," they said to him, "this woman was caught in the act of committing adultery.
5In the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?"
6They asked this to trap him, in order that they might have evidence to accuse him. Jesus stooped down and started writing on the ground with his finger.
7When they persisted in questioning him, he stood up and said to them, "The one without sin among you should be the first to throw a stone at her."
8Then he stooped down again and continued writing on the ground.
9When they heard this, they left one by one, starting with the older men. Only he was left, with the woman in the center.
10When Jesus stood up, he said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
14"Even if I testify about myself," Jesus replied, "My testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I’m going. But you don’t know where I come from or where I’m going.
15You judge by human standards. I judge no one.
16And if I do judge, my judgment is true, because it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me.
17Even in your law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.
18I am the one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me."
19Then they asked him, "Where is your Father?" "You know neither me nor my Father," Jesus answered. "If you knew me, you would also know my Father."
20He spoke these words by the treasury, while teaching in the temple. But no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
23"You are from below," he told them, "I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
24Therefore I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I am he, you will die in your sins."
25"Who are you?" they questioned. "Exactly what I’ve been telling you from the very beginning," Jesus told them.
26"I have many things to say and to judge about you, but the one who sent me is true, and what I have heard from him—these things I tell the world."
27They did not know he was speaking to them about the Father.
28So Jesus said to them, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own. But just as the Father taught me, I say these things.
29The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what pleases him."
31Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, "If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples.
32You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
34Jesus responded, "Truly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.
35A slave does not remain in the household forever, but a son does remain forever.
36So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.
37I know you are descendants of Abraham, but you are trying to kill me because my word has no place among you.
38I speak what I have seen in the presence of the Father; so then, you do what you have heard from your father."
39"Our father is Abraham," they replied. "If you were Abraham’s children," Jesus told them, "you would do what Abraham did.
40But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do this.
42Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, because I came from God and I am here. For I didn’t come on my own, but he sent me.
43Why don’t you understand what I say? Because you cannot listen to my word.
44You are of your father the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.
45Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.
46Who among you can convict me of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?
47The one who is from God listens to God’s words. This is why you don’t listen, because you are not from God."
49"I do not have a demon," Jesus answered. "On the contrary, I honor my Father and you dishonor me.
50I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks it and judges.
51Truly I tell you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death."
52Then the Jews said, "Now we know you have a demon. Abraham died and so did the prophets. You say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’
53Are you greater than our father Abraham who died? And the prophets died. Who do you claim to be?"
54"If I glorify myself," Jesus answered, "my glory is nothing. My Father—about whom you say, ‘He is our God’—he is the one who glorifies me.
55You do not know him, but I know him. If I were to say I don’t know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I keep his word.
56Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; he saw it and was glad."
Chapter 9
1As he was passing by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples asked him: "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
3"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," Jesus answered. "This came about so that God’s works might be displayed in him.
4We must do the works of him who sent me while it is day. Night is coming when no one can work.
5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."
6After he said these things he spit on the ground, made some mud from the saliva, and spread the mud on his eyes.
7"Go," he told him, "wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means "Sent"). So he left, washed, and came back seeing.
13They brought the man who used to be blind to the Pharisees.
14The day that Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes was a Sabbath.
20"We know this is our son and that he was born blind," his parents answered.
21"But we don’t know how he now sees, and we don’t know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he’s of age. He will speak for himself."
22His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews, since the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed him as the Messiah, he would be banned from the synagogue.
23This is why his parents said, "He’s of age; ask him."
28They ridiculed him: "You’re that man’s disciple, but we’re Moses’s disciples.
29We know that God has spoken to Moses. But this man—we don’t know where he’s from."
30"This is an amazing thing!" the man told them. "You don’t know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes.
31We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but if anyone is God-fearing and does his will, he listens to him.
32Throughout history no one has ever heard of someone opening the eyes of a person born blind.
33If this man were not from God, he wouldn’t be able to do anything."
Chapter 10
1"Truly I tell you, anyone who doesn’t enter the sheep pen by the gate but climbs in some other way is a thief and a robber. 2The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he has brought all his own outside, he goes ahead of them. The sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5They will never follow a stranger; instead they will run away from him, because they don’t know the voice of strangers." 6Jesus gave them this figure of speech, but they did not understand what he was telling them.
7Jesus said again, "Truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.
8All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them.
9I am the gate. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture.
10A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.
11"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
12The hired hand, since he is not the shepherd and doesn’t own the sheep, leaves them and runs away when he sees a wolf coming. The wolf then snatches and scatters them.
13This happens because he is a hired hand and doesn’t care about the sheep.
14"I am the good shepherd. I know my own, and my own know me,
15just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep.

19Again the Jews were divided because of these words.
20Many of them were saying, "He has a demon and he’s crazy. Why do you listen to him?"
21Others were saying, "These aren’t the words of someone who is demon-possessed. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?"
22Then the Festival of Dedication took place in Jerusalem, and it was winter.
23Jesus was walking in the temple in Solomon’s Colonnade.
24The Jews surrounded him and asked, "How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly."
25"I did tell you and you don’t believe," Jesus answered them. "The works that I do in my Father’s name testify about me.
26But you don’t believe because you are not of my sheep.
27My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.
28I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand.
29My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all. No one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
30I and the Father are one."
34Jesus answered them, "Isn’t it written in your law, I said, you are gods?
35If he called those whom the word of God came to ‘gods’—and the Scripture cannot be broken—
36do you say, ‘You are blaspheming’ to the one the Father set apart and sent into the world, because I said: I am the Son of God?
37If I am not doing my Father’s works, don’t believe me.
38But if I am doing them and you don’t believe me, believe the works. This way you will know and understand that the Father is in me and I in the Father."
39Then they were trying again to seize him, but he eluded their grasp.
40So he departed again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing earlier, and he remained there.
41Many came to him and said, "John never did a sign, but everything John said about this man was true."
42And many believed in him there.
Chapter 11
1Now a man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair, and it was her brother Lazarus who was sick. 3So the sisters sent a message to him: "Lord, the one you love is sick."
4When Jesus heard it, he said, "This sickness will not end in death but is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it."
5Now Jesus loved Martha, her sister, and Lazarus.
6So when he heard that he was sick, he stayed two more days in the place where he was.
7Then after that, he said to the disciples, "Let’s go to Judea again."
9"Aren’t there twelve hours in a day?" Jesus answered. "If anyone walks during the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10But if anyone walks during the night, he does stumble, because the light is not in him."
13Jesus, however, was speaking about his death, but they thought he was speaking about natural sleep.
14So Jesus then told them plainly, "Lazarus has died.
15I’m glad for you that I wasn’t there so that you may believe. But let’s go to him."
17When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.
18Bethany was near Jerusalem (less than two miles away).
19Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.
20As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary remained seated in the house.
21Then Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.
22Yet even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you."
25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live.
26Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
29As soon as Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.
30Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still in the place where Martha had met him.
31The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw that Mary got up quickly and went out. They followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to cry there.
36So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!"
37But some of them said, "Couldn’t he who opened the blind man’s eyes also have kept this man from dying?"
38Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.
41So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you heard me.
42I know that you always hear me, but because of the crowd standing here I said this, so that they may believe you sent me."
43After he said this, he shouted with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"
44The dead man came out bound hand and foot with linen strips and with his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unwrap him and let him go."
45Therefore, many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he did believed in him.
46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
47So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and were saying, "What are we going to do since this man is doing many signs?
48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."
49One of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all!
50You’re not considering that it is to your advantage that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish."
51He did not say this on his own, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation,
52and not for the nation only, but also to unite the scattered children of God.
53So from that day on they plotted to kill him.
55Now the Jewish Passover was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the country to purify themselves before the Passover.
56They were looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple: "What do you think? He won’t come to the festival, will he?"
57The chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it so that they could arrest him.

Chapter 8
1Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, 2but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. 3As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd.
4Teacher,' they said to Jesus, 'this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
5The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?'
6They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger.
7They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, 'All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!'
8Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.
9When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman.
10Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, 'Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?'
14Jesus told them, 'These claims are valid even though I make them about myself. For I know where I came from and where I am going, but you don’t know this about me.
15You judge me by human standards, but I do not judge anyone.
16And if I did, my judgment would be correct in every respect because I am not alone. The Father who sent me is with me.
17Your own law says that if two people agree about something, their witness is accepted as fact.
18I am one witness, and my Father who sent me is the other.'
19Where is your father?' they asked. Jesus answered, 'Since you don’t know who I am, you don’t know who my Father is. If you knew me, you would also know my Father.'
20Jesus made these statements while he was teaching in the section of the Temple known as the Treasury. But he was not arrested, because his time had not yet come.
23Jesus continued, 'You are from below; I am from above. You belong to this world; I do not.
24That is why I said that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I AM who I claim to be, you will die in your sins.'
25Who are you?' they demanded. Jesus replied, 'The one I have always claimed to be.
26I have much to say about you and much to condemn, but I won’t. For I say only what I have heard from the one who sent me, and he is completely truthful.'
27But they still didn’t understand that he was talking about his Father.
28So Jesus said, 'When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will understand that I AM he. I do nothing on my own but say only what the Father taught me.
29And the one who sent me is with me — he has not deserted me. For I always do what pleases him.'
30Then many who heard him say these things believed in him.
31Jesus said to the people who believed in him, 'You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.
32And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'
34Jesus replied, 'I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin.
35A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever.
36So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.
37Yes, I realize that you are descendants of Abraham. And yet some of you are trying to kill me because there’s no room in your hearts for my message.
38I am telling you what I saw when I was with my Father. But you are following the advice of your father.'
39Our father is Abraham!' they declared. 'No,' Jesus replied, 'for if you were really the children of Abraham, you would follow his example.
40Instead, you are trying to kill me because I told you the truth, which I heard from God. Abraham never did such a thing.
42Jesus told them, 'If God were your Father, you would love me, because I have come to you from God. I am not here on my own, but he sent me.
43Why can’t you understand what I am saying? It’s because you can’t even hear me!
44For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.
45So when I tell the truth, you just naturally don’t believe me!
46Which of you can truthfully accuse me of sin? And since I am telling you the truth, why don’t you believe me?
47Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God. But you don’t listen because you don’t belong to God.'
49No,' Jesus said, 'I have no demon in me. For I honor my Father — and you dishonor me.
50And though I have no wish to glorify myself, God is going to glorify me. He is the true judge.
51I tell you the truth, anyone who obeys my teaching will never die!'
52The people said, 'Now we know you are possessed by a demon. Even Abraham and the prophets died, but you say, ‘Anyone who obeys my teaching will never die!’
53Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?'
54Jesus answered, 'If I want glory for myself, it doesn’t count. But it is my Father who will glorify me. You say, ‘He is our God,’
55but you don’t even know him. I know him. If I said otherwise, I would be as great a liar as you! But I do know him and obey him.
56Your father Abraham rejoiced as he looked forward to my coming. He saw it and was glad.'
58Jesus answered, 'I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I AM! '
59At that point they picked up stones to throw at him. But Jesus was hidden from them and left the Temple.
Chapter 9
1As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. 2Rabbi,' his disciples asked him, 'why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?'
3It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,' Jesus answered. 'This happened so the power of God could be seen in him.
4We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work.
5But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.'
6Then he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the mud over the blind man’s eyes.
7He told him, 'Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam' (Siloam means 'sent'). So the man went and washed and came back seeing!
13Then they took the man who had been blind to the Pharisees,
14because it was on the Sabbath that Jesus had made the mud and healed him.
15The Pharisees asked the man all about it. So he told them, 'He put the mud over my eyes, and when I washed it away, I could see!'
18The Jewish leaders still refused to believe the man had been blind and could now see, so they called in his parents.
19They asked them, 'Is this your son? Was he born blind? If so, how can he now see?'
20His parents replied, 'We know this is our son and that he was born blind,
21but we don’t know how he can see or who healed him. Ask him. He is old enough to speak for himself.'
22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who had announced that anyone saying Jesus was the Messiah would be expelled from the synagogue.
23That’s why they said, 'He is old enough. Ask him.'
28Then they cursed him and said, 'You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses!
29We know God spoke to Moses, but we don’t even know where this man comes from.'
30Why, that’s very strange!' the man replied. 'He healed my eyes, and yet you don’t know where he comes from?
31We know that God doesn’t listen to sinners, but he is ready to hear those who worship him and do his will.
32Ever since the world began, no one has been able to open the eyes of someone born blind.
33If this man were not from God, he couldn’t have done it.'
Chapter 10
1I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber! 2But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice. 5They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.'
6Those who heard Jesus use this illustration didn’t understand what he meant,
7so he explained it to them: 'I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep.
8All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them.
9Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.
10The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
11I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.
12A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock.
13The hired hand runs away because he’s working only for the money and doesn’t really care about the sheep.
14I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me,
15just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.
16I have other sheep, too, that are not in this sheepfold. I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock with one shepherd.
17The Father loves me because I sacrifice my life so I may take it back again.
18No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.'
19When he said these things, the people were again divided in their opinions about him.
20Some said, 'He’s demon possessed and out of his mind. Why listen to a man like that?'
21Others said, 'This doesn’t sound like a man possessed by a demon! Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?'
22It was now winter, and Jesus was in Jerusalem at the time of Hanukkah, the Festival of Dedication.
23He was in the Temple, walking through the section known as Solomon’s Colonnade.
24The people surrounded him and asked, 'How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.'
25Jesus replied, 'I have already told you, and you don’t believe me. The proof is the work I do in my Father’s name.
26But you don’t believe me because you are not my sheep.
27My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
28I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me,
29for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand.
30The Father and I are one.'
31Once again the people picked up stones to kill him.
32Jesus said, 'At my Father’s direction I have done many good works. For which one are you going to stone me?'
34Jesus replied, 'It is written in your own Scriptures that God said to certain leaders of the people, ‘I say, you are gods!’
35And you know that the Scriptures cannot be altered. So if those people who received God’s message were called ‘gods,’
36why do you call it blasphemy when I say, ‘I am the Son of God’? After all, the Father set me apart and sent me into the world.
37Don’t believe me unless I carry out my Father’s work.
38But if I do his work, believe in the evidence of the miraculous works I have done, even if you don’t believe me. Then you will know and understand that the Father is in me, and I am in the Father.'
39Once again they tried to arrest him, but he got away and left them.
40He went beyond the Jordan River near the place where John was first baptizing and stayed there awhile.
41And many followed him. 'John didn’t perform miraculous signs,' they remarked to one another, 'but everything he said about this man has come true.'
42And many who were there believed in Jesus.
Chapter 11
1A man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha. 2This is the Mary who later poured the expensive perfume on the Lord’s feet and wiped them with her hair. Her brother, Lazarus, was sick. 3So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him, 'Lord, your dear friend is very sick.'
4But when Jesus heard about it he said, 'Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.'
5So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus,
6he stayed where he was for the next two days.
7Finally, he said to his disciples, 'Let’s go back to Judea.'
9Jesus replied, 'There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world.
10But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.'
11Then he said, 'Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.'
12The disciples said, 'Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!'
13They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died.
14So he told them plainly, 'Lazarus is dead.
15And for your sakes, I’m glad I wasn’t there, for now you will really believe. Come, let’s go see him.'
17When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days.
18Bethany was only a few miles down the road from Jerusalem,
19and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss.
20When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house.
21Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.
22But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.'
25Jesus told her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying.
26Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?'
27Yes, Lord,' she told him. 'I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.'
28Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, 'The Teacher is here and wants to see you.'
29So Mary immediately went to him.
30Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him.
31When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there.
32When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, 'Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.'
34Where have you put him?' he asked them. They told him, 'Lord, come and see.'
35Then Jesus wept.
36The people who were standing nearby said, 'See how much he loved him!'
37But some said, 'This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?'
40Jesus responded, 'Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?'
41So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, 'Father, thank you for hearing me.
42You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.'
43Then Jesus shouted, 'Lazarus, come out!'
44And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, 'Unwrap him and let him go!'
45Many of the people who were with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen.
46But some went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
47Then the leading priests and Pharisees called the high council together. 'What are we going to do?' they asked each other. 'This man certainly performs many miraculous signs.
48If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him. Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation.'
49Caiaphas, who was high priest at that time, said, 'You don’t know what you’re talking about!
50You don’t realize that it’s better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.'
51He did not say this on his own; as high priest at that time he was led to prophesy that Jesus would die for the entire nation.
52And not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite all the children of God scattered around the world.
53So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus’ death.
54As a result, Jesus stopped his public ministry among the people and left Jerusalem. He went to a place near the wilderness, to the village of Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples.
55It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem several days early so they could go through the purification ceremony before Passover began.
56They kept looking for Jesus, but as they stood around in the Temple, they said to each other, 'What do you think? He won’t come for Passover, will he?'
57Meanwhile, the leading priests and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing Jesus must report it immediately so they could arrest him.

1but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4they said to him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?" 6This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her." 8And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. 9But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10Jesus stood up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? 22So the Jews said, "Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?"
23He said to them, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
24I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins."
25So they said to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been telling you from the beginning.
26I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him."
27They did not understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father.
28So Jesus said to them, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me.
29And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him."
30As he was saying these things, many believed in him.
31So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,
32and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
33They answered him, "We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?"
34Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
35The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever.
36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
37I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you.
38I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father."
39They answered him, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham 's children, you would be doing the works Abraham did,
40but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did.
41You are doing the works your father did." They said to him, "We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father — even God."
42Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me.
43Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word.
44You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father 's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
45But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.

49Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.
50Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge.
51Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death."
52The Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’
53Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?"
54Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’
55But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word.
56Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad."
57So the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?"
58Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am."

Chapter 9
1As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2And his disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" 3Jesus answered, "It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." 6Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man 's eyes with the mud 7and said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.
8The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, "Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?"
9Some said, "It is he." Others said, "No, but he is like him." He kept saying, "I am the man."

11He answered, "The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight."
12They said to him, "Where is he?" He said, "I do not know."
13They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind.
14Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.
15So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, "He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see."
16Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." But others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" And there was a division among them.
17So they said again to the blind man, "What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet."
18The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight
19and asked them, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?"
20His parents answered, "We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.
21But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself."
22(His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.
23Therefore his parents said, "He is of age; ask him.")
24So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, "Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner."
25He answered, "Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see."
26They said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"
27He answered them, "I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?"
28And they reviled him, saying, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.
29We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from."
30The man answered, "Why, this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes.
31We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him.
32Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind.
33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing."
34They answered him, "You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?" And they cast him out.
35Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"
36He answered, "And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?"
37Jesus said to him, "You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you."
38He said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped him.
39Jesus said, "For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind."
40Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, "Are we also blind?"
41Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.
Chapter 10
1"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. 2But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers." 6This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.
7So Jesus again said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.
8All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
9I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.
10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
11I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
12He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.
13He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
14I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,
15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.
16And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.
17For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again.
18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father."
19There was again a division among the Jews because of these words.
20Many of them said, "He has a demon, and is insane; why listen to him?"
21Others said, "These are not the words of one who is oppressed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?"
22At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter,
23and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the colonnade of Solomon.
24So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly."
25Jesus answered them, "I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father 's name bear witness about me,
26but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep.
27My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
28I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
29My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father 's hand.

33The Jews answered him, "It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God."

35If he called them gods to whom the word of God came — and Scripture cannot be broken —
36do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?
37If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me;
38but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father."
39Again they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands.
40He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing at first, and there he remained.
41And many came to him. And they said, "John did no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true."
42And many believed in him there.
Chapter 11
1Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3So the sisters sent to him, saying, "Lord, he whom you love is ill." 4But when Jesus heard it he said, "This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it."
5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
6So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.
7Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let us go to Judea again."
8The disciples said to him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?"
9Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."
11After saying these things, he said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him."
12The disciples said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."
13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep.
14Then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus has died,
15and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him."
16So Thomas, called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."
17Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.
18Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off,
19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother.
20So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house.
21Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
22But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you."
23Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."
24Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day."
25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,
26and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?"
27She said to him, "Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world."
28When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you."
29And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him.
30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him.
31When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
32Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."
33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled.
34And he said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see."
35Jesus wept.
36So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!"
37But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?"
38Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
39Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days."
40Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?"
41So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me.
42I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me."
43When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out."
44The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."
45Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him,
46but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
47So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, "What are we to do? For this man performs many signs.
48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."
49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all.
50Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish."
51He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,
52and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
53So from that day on they made plans to put him to death.
55Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves.
56They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, "What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?"
57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.

Chapter 8
1but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
2At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.
3The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group
4and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
5In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?"
6They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.
7When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."
8Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.
10Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
14Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going.
15You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one.
16But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.
17In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.
18I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me."
19Then they asked him, "Where is your father?" "You do not know me or my Father," Jesus replied. "If you knew me, you would know my Father also."
20He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
23But he continued, "You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
24I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins."
25"Who are you?" they asked. "Just what I have been telling you from the beginning," Jesus replied.
26"I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world."
27They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.
28So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.
29The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him."
30Even as he spoke, many believed in him.
31To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
34Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
35Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
37I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word.
38I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father. "
39"Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham’s children," said Jesus, "then you would do what Abraham did.
40As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.
42Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me.
43Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say.
44You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
45Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!
46Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?
47Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God."
49"I am not possessed by a demon," said Jesus, "but I honor my Father and you dishonor me.
50I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge.
51Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death."
52At this they exclaimed, "Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death.
53Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?"
54Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.
55Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.
56Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad."
58"Very truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"
59At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
Chapter 9
1As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
3"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
4As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.
5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."
6After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes.
7"Go," he told him, "wash in the Pool of Siloam" (this word means "Sent"). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.
13They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
14Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.
15Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. "He put mud on my eyes," the man replied, "and I washed, and now I see."
18They still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents.
19"Is this your son?" they asked. "Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?"
20"We know he is our son," the parents answered, "and we know he was born blind.
21But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself."
22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.
23That was why his parents said, "He is of age; ask him."
28Then they hurled insults at him and said, "You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!
29We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from."
30The man answered, "Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.
31We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.
32Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.
33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing."
Chapter 10
1"Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice." 6Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.
7Therefore Jesus said again, "Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.
8All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them.
9I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.
10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
11"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
12The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it.
13The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
14"I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—
15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.
16I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.
17The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again.
18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."
19The Jews who heard these words were again divided.
20Many of them said, "He is demon-possessed and raving mad. Why listen to him?"
22Then came the Festival of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter,
23and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon’s Colonnade.
24The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly."
25Jesus answered, "I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,
26but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.
27My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
28I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.
29My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all ; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.
30I and the Father are one."
31Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him,
32but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?"
34Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are "gods" ’ ?
35If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be set aside—
36what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?
37Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father.
38But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father."
39Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp.
40Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. There he stayed,
41and many people came to him. They said, "Though John never performed a sign, all that John said about this man was true."
42And in that place many believed in Jesus.
Chapter 11
1Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2(This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) 3So the sisters sent word to Jesus, "Lord, the one you love is sick."
4When he heard this, Jesus said, "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it."
5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
6So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days,
7and then he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea."
9Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.
10It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light."
12His disciples replied, "Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better."
13Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.
14So then he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead,
15and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him."
17On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.
18Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,
19and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.
20When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.
21"Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
22But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask."
25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;
26and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
28After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. "The Teacher is here," she said, "and is asking for you."
29When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.
30Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.
31When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.

47Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What are we accomplishing?" they asked. "Here is this man performing many signs.
48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation."
49Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, "You know nothing at all!
50You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish."

28Then they reviled him and said, “You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples.
29We know that God spoke to Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where He is from.”
30The man answered and said to them, “Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes!
31Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.
32Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind.
33If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.”

25Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me.
26But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you.
27My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
28And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.
29My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.
30I and My Father are one.”
31Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him.
32Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”
34Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods” ’?
35If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),
36do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?
37If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me;
38but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.”
39Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.
40And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed.
41Then many came to Him and said, “John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true.”
42And many believed in Him there.
Chapter 11
1Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. 2It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”
5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
6So, when He heard that he was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was.
7Then after this He said to the disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”
9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
11These things He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.”
12Then His disciples said, “Lord, if he sleeps he will get well.”
13However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep.
14Then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.
15And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that you may believe. Nevertheless let us go to him.”
17So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days.
18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away.
19And many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20Now Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house.
21Now Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.
22But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”
25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.
26And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
28And when she had said these things, she went her way and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, “The Teacher has come and is calling for you.”
29As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him.
30Now Jesus had not yet come into the town, but was in the place where Martha met Him.
31Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and comforting her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”
40Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?”
41Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
42And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.”
43Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!”
44And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”
45Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen the things Jesus did, believed in Him.
46But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things Jesus did.
47Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, “What shall we do? For this Man works many signs.
48If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.”
49And one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,
50nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.”
51Now this he did not say on his own authority; but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,
52and not for that nation only, but also that He would gather together in one the children of God who were scattered abroad.
53Then, from that day on, they plotted to put Him to death.
54Therefore Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there remained with His disciples.
55And the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went from the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.
56Then they sought Jesus, and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that He will not come to the feast?”
57Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it, that they might seize Him.
