Genesis 1-8
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 1
1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2And the earth was a formless and desolate emptiness, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. 3Then God said, 'Let there be light'; and there was light. 4God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light 'day,' and the darkness He called 'night.' And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
6Then God said, 'Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.'
7God made the expanse, and separated the waters that were below the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse; and it was so.
8God called the expanse 'heaven.' And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.
9Then God said, 'Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear'; and it was so.
10And God called the dry land 'earth,' and the gathering of the waters He called 'seas'; and God saw that it was good.
11Then God said, 'Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit according to their kind with seed in them'; and it was so.
12The earth produced vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them, according to their kind; and God saw that it was good.
13And there was evening and there was morning, a third day.
14Then God said, 'Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and they shall serve as signs and for seasons, and for days and years;
15and they shall serve as lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth'; and it was so.
16God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also.
17God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,
18and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good.
19And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.
20Then God said, 'Let the waters teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens.'
21And God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind; and God saw that it was good.
22God blessed them, saying, 'Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.'
23And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.
24Then God said, 'Let the earth produce living creatures according to their kind: livestock and crawling things and animals of the earth according to their kind'; and it was so.
25God made the animals of the earth according to their kind, and the livestock according to their kind, and everything that crawls on the ground according to its kind; and God saw that it was good.
26Then God said, 'Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the livestock and over all the earth, and over every crawling thing that crawls on the earth.'
27So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
28God blessed them; and God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.'
29Then God said, 'Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;
30and to every animal of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to everything that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food'; and it was so.
31And God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
Chapter 2
1And so the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their heavenly lights. 2By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. 3Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
4This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made earth and heaven.
5Now no shrub of the field was yet on the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the Lord God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.
6But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground.
7Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living person.
8The Lord God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed.
9Out of the ground the Lord God caused every tree to grow that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it divided and became four rivers.
11The name of the first is Pishon; it flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
12The gold of that land is good; the bdellium and the onyx stone are there as well.
13The name of the second river is Gihon; it flows around the whole land of Cush.
14The name of the third river is Tigris; it flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and tend it.
16The Lord God commanded the man, saying, 'From any tree of the garden you may freely eat;
17but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for on the day that you eat from it you will certainly die.'
18Then the Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.'
19And out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.
20The man gave names to all the livestock, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him.
21So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place.
22And the Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.
24For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.
25And the man and his wife were both naked, but they were not ashamed.
Chapter 3
1Now the serpent was more cunning than any animal of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, 'Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?' 2The woman said to the serpent, 'From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’?' 4The serpent said to the woman, 'You certainly will not die! 5For God knows that on the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will become like God, knowing good and evil.' 6When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate. 7Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves waist coverings.
8Now they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
9Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, 'Where are you?'
10He said, 'I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.'
11And He said, 'Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?'
12The man said, 'The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me some of the fruit of the tree, and I ate.'
13Then the Lord God said to the woman, 'What is this that you have done?' And the woman said, 'The serpent deceived me, and I ate.'
14Then the Lord God said to the serpent, 'Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all the livestock, And more than any animal of the field; On your belly you shall go, And dust you shall eat All the days of your life;
15And I will make enemies Of you and the woman, And of your offspring and her Descendant; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise Him on the heel.'
16To the woman He said, 'I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you shall deliver children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he shall rule over you.'
17Then to Adam He said, 'Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground because of you; With hard labor you shall eat from it All the days of your life.
18Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; Yet you shall eat the plants of the field;
20Now the man named his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all the living.
21And the Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.
22Then the Lord God said, 'Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might reach out with his hand, and take fruit also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever'—
23therefore the Lord God sent him out of the Garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken.
24So He drove the man out; and at the east of the Garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.
Chapter 4
1Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, 'I have obtained a male child with the help of the Lord.' 2And again, she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of flocks, but Cain was a cultivator of the ground. 3So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the Lord from the fruit of the ground. 4Abel, on his part also brought an offering, from the firstborn of his flock and from their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering; 5but for Cain and his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his face was gloomy. 6Then the Lord said to Cain, 'Why are you angry? And why is your face gloomy? 7If you do well, will your face not be cheerful? And if you do not do well, sin is lurking at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.' 8Cain talked to his brother Abel; and it happened that when they were in the field Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
9Then the Lord said to Cain, 'Where is Abel your brother?' And he said, 'I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?'
10Then He said, 'What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying out to Me from the ground.
11Now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
12When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; you will be a wanderer and a drifter on the earth.'
13Cain said to the Lord, 'My punishment is too great to endure!
14Behold, You have driven me this day from the face of the ground; and I will be hidden from Your face, and I will be a wanderer and a drifter on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.'
15So the Lord said to him, 'Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him seven times as much.' And the Lord placed a mark on Cain, so that no one finding him would kill him.
17Cain had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and Cain built a city, and named the city Enoch, after the name of his son.
18Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech.
19Lamech took two wives for himself: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other, Zillah.
20Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and have livestock.
21His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and flute.
22As for Zillah, she also gave birth to Tubal-cain, the forger of all implements of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
25Adam had relations with his wife again; and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, for, she said, 'God has appointed me another child in place of Abel, because Cain killed him.'
26To Seth also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then people began to call upon the name of the Lord.
Chapter 5
1This is the book of the generations of Adam. On the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. 2He created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them 'mankind' on the day when they were created.
3When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth.
4Then the days of Adam after he fathered Seth were eight hundred years, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
5So all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.
6Now Seth lived 105 years, and fathered Enosh.
7Then Seth lived 807 years after he fathered Enosh, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
8So all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died.
9Now Enosh lived ninety years, and fathered Kenan.
10Then Enosh lived 815 years after he fathered Kenan, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
11So all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.
12Now Kenan lived seventy years, and fathered Mahalalel.
13Then Kenan lived 840 years after he fathered Mahalalel, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
14So all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died.
15Now Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and fathered Jared.
16Then Mahalalel lived 830 years after he fathered Jared, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
17So all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died.
18Now Jared lived 162 years, and fathered Enoch.
19Then Jared lived eight hundred years after he fathered Enoch, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
20So all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.
21Now Enoch lived sixty-five years, and fathered Methuselah.
22Then Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he fathered Methuselah, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
23So all the days of Enoch were 365 years.
24Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
25Now Methuselah lived 187 years, and fathered Lamech.
26Then Methuselah lived 782 years after he fathered Lamech, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
27So all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died.
28Now Lamech lived 182 years, and fathered a son.
29And he named him Noah, saying, 'This one will give us comfort from our work and from the hard labor of our hands caused by the ground which the Lord has cursed.'
30Then Lamech lived 595 years after he fathered Noah, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
31So all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.
Chapter 6
1Now it came about, when mankind began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, 2that the sons of God saw that the daughters of mankind were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. 3Then the Lord said, 'My Spirit will not remain with man forever, because he is also flesh; nevertheless his days shall be 120 years.' 4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of mankind, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.
5Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of mankind was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually.
6So the Lord was sorry that He had made mankind on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.
7Then the Lord said, 'I will wipe out mankind whom I have created from the face of the land; mankind, and animals as well, and crawling things, and the birds of the sky. For I am sorry that I have made them.'
8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
9These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.
10And Noah fathered three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence.
12And God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for humanity had corrupted its way upon the earth.
13Then God said to Noah, 'The end of humanity has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of people; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.
14Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; you shall make the ark with compartments, and cover it inside and out with pitch.
15This is how you shall make it: the length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.
16You shall make a window for the ark, and finish it to a cubit from the top; and put the door of the ark on the side; you shall make it with lower, second, and third decks.
17Now behold, I Myself am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which there is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish.
18But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.
19And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female.
20Of the birds according to their kind, and of the animals according to their kind, of every crawling thing of the ground according to its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive.
21As for you, take for yourself some of every food that is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be food for you and them.'
22So Noah did these things; according to everything that God had commanded him, so he did.
Chapter 7
1Then the Lord said to Noah, 'Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this generation. 2You shall take with you seven pairs of every clean animal, a male and his female; and two of the animals that are not clean, a male and his female; 3also of the birds of the sky, seven pairs, male and female, to keep their offspring alive on the face of all the earth. 4For after seven more days, I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights; and I will wipe out from the face of the land every living thing that I have made.' 5So Noah acted in accordance with everything that the Lord had commanded him.
6Now Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of water came upon the earth.
7Then Noah and his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives with him entered the ark because of the waters of the flood.
8Of clean animals and animals that are not clean and birds and everything that crawls on the ground,
9they all went into the ark to Noah by twos, male and female, as God had commanded Noah.
10Now it came about after the seven days, that the waters of the flood came upon the earth.
11In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened.
12The rain fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.
13On this very same day Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark,
14they and every animal according to its kind, and all the livestock according to their kind, and every crawling thing that crawls on the earth according to its kind, and every bird according to its kind, all sorts of birds.
15So they went into the ark to Noah, by twos of all flesh in which there was the breath of life.
16Those that entered, male and female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him; and the Lord closed the door behind him.
17Then the flood came upon the earth for forty days, and the water increased and lifted up the ark, so that it rose above the earth.
18The water prevailed and increased greatly upon the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water.
19And the water prevailed more and more upon the earth, so that all the high mountains everywhere under the heavens were covered.
20The water prevailed fifteen cubits higher, and the mountains were covered.
21So all creatures that moved on the earth perished: birds, livestock, animals, and every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth, and all mankind;
22of all that was on the dry land, all in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, died.
23So He wiped out every living thing that was upon the face of the land, from mankind to animals, to crawling things, and the birds of the sky, and they were wiped out from the earth; and only Noah was left, together with those that were with him in the ark.
24The water prevailed upon the earth for 150 days.
Chapter 8
1But God remembered Noah and all the animals and all the livestock that were with him in the ark; and God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided. 2Also the fountains of the deep and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the rain from the sky was restrained; 3and the water receded steadily from the earth, and at the end of 150 days the water decreased. 4Then in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat. 5And the water decreased steadily until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains became visible.
6Then it came about at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made;
7and he sent out a raven, and it flew here and there until the water was dried up from the earth.
8Then he sent out a dove, to see if the water was low on the surface of the land;
9but the dove found no resting place for the sole of its foot, so it returned to him in the ark, for the water was on the surface of all the earth. Then he put out his hand and took it, and brought it into the ark to himself.
10So he waited another seven days longer; and again he sent out the dove from the ark.
11And the dove came to him in the evening, and behold, in its beak was a fresh olive leaf. So Noah knew that the water was low on the earth.
12Then he waited another seven days longer, and sent out the dove; but it did not return to him again.
13Now it came about in the six hundred and first year, in the first month, on the first of the month, that the water was dried up from the earth. Then Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and behold, the surface of the ground had dried up.
14And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry.
15Then God spoke to Noah, saying,
16Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons’ wives with you.
17Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you, birds and animals and every crawling thing that crawls on the earth, that they may breed abundantly on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.'
18So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him.
19Every animal, every crawling thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out by their families from the ark.
20Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took some of every kind of clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
21The Lord smelled the soothing aroma, and the Lord said to Himself, 'I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.
King James Version
Chapter 1
1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
3And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
6And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
9And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
11And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
12And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13And the evening and the morning were the third day.
14And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
15And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
20And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
24And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
25And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
26And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
29And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
30And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
Chapter 2
1Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
4These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
5And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.
6But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
7And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
8And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
9And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
10And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.
11The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;
12And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone.
13And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia.
14And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.
15And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
16And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
17But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
18And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
19And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.
20And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.
21And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
23And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
24Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
25And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
Chapter 3
1Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
7And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
8And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
9And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
12And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
13And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
14And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
15And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
17And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
18Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
19In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
22And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
24So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
Chapter 4
1And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. 2And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
3And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
4And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
5But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
6And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
7If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
9And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?
10And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.
11And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;
12When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
13And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
14Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.
15And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
16And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
17And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.
18And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.
19And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
20And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.
21And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
22And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.
23And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.
24If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.
25And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
26And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
Chapter 5
1This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; 2Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. 3And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: 4And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters: 5And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.
6And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos:
7And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters:
8And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died.
9And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan:
10And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters:
11And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.
12And Cainan lived seventy years, and begat Mahalaleel:
13And Cainan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters:

15And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Jared:
16And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters:
17And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died.
18And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch:
19And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:
20And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.
21And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah:
22And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:
23And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:
24And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.
25And Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years, and begat Lamech:
26And Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begat sons and daughters:
27And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died.
28And Lamech lived an hundred eighty and two years, and begat a son:
29And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.
30And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters:
31And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.
32And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
Chapter 6
1And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
4There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
5And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
7And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
8But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
9These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.
10And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
12And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.
13And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
14Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.
15And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.
16A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.
17And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.
18But with thee will I establish my covenant; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.
19And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.
20Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.
21And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.
Chapter 7
1And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation. 2Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female. 3Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth. 4For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.
5And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him.
6And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
13In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;
14They, and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.
15And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.
16And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.
17And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.
18And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.
19And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.
20Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.
21And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:
22All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.
23And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.
24And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.
Chapter 8
1And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged; 2The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained; 3And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.
4And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.
5And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.
6And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made:
7And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth.
8Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground;
9But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.
10And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark;
11And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.
12And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more.
13And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry.
14And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried.
15And God spake unto Noah, saying,
16Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons' wives with thee.
17Bring forth with thee every living thing that is with thee, of all flesh, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth; that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply upon the earth.
18And Noah went forth, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him:
19Every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, and whatsoever creepeth upon the earth, after their kinds, went forth out of the ark.
20And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
21And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
22While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
Christian Standard Bible
2Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
3Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
4God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness.
5God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." There was an evening, and there was a morning: one day.
6Then God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters, separating water from water."
7So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above the expanse. And it was so.
8God called the expanse "sky." Evening came and then morning: the second day.
9Then God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so.
10God called the dry land "earth," and the gathering of the water he called "seas." And God saw that it was good.
11Then God said, "Let the earth produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds." And it was so.
12The earth produced vegetation: seed-bearing plants according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
13Evening came and then morning: the third day.
14Then God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night. They will serve as signs for seasons and for days and years.
15They will be lights in the expanse of the sky to provide light on the earth." And it was so.
16God made the two great lights--the greater light to rule over the day and the lesser light to rule over the night--as well as the stars.
17God placed them in the expanse of the sky to provide light on the earth,
18to rule the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.
19Evening came and then morning: the fourth day.
20Then God said, "Let the water swarm with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky."
21So God created the large sea-creatures and every living creature that moves and swarms in the water, according to their kinds. He also created every winged creature according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
22God blessed them: "Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters of the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth."
23Evening came and then morning: the fifth day.
24Then God said, "Let the earth produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that crawl, and the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds." And it was so.
25So God made the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that crawl on the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
28God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth."
29God also said, "Look, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the surface of the entire earth and every tree whose fruit contains seed. This will be food for you,
30for all the wildlife of the earth, for every bird of the sky, and for every creature that crawls on the earth--everything having the breath of life in it--I have given every green plant for food." And it was so.
31God saw all that he had made, and it was very good indeed. Evening came and then morning: the sixth day.
Chapter 2
1So the heavens and the earth and everything in them were completed. 2On the seventh day God had completed his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, for on it he rested from all his work of creation.
4These are the records of the heavens and the earth, concerning their creation. At the time that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
5no shrub of the field had yet grown on the land, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the Lord God had not made it rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground.
6But mist would come up from the earth and water all the ground.
7Then the Lord God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.
8The Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he placed the man he had formed.
9The Lord God caused to grow out of the ground every tree pleasing in appearance and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden, as well as the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10A river went out from Eden to water the garden. From there it divided and became the source of four rivers.
11The name of the first is Pishon, which flows through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold.
12Gold from that land is pure; bdellium and onyx are also there.
13The name of the second river is Gihon, which flows through the entire land of Cush.
14The name of the third river is Tigris, which runs east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15The Lord God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and watch over it.
16And the Lord God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree of the garden,
17but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die."
18Then the Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper corresponding to him."
19The Lord God formed out of the ground every wild animal and every bird of the sky, and brought each to the man to see what he would call it. And whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.
20The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the sky, and to every wild animal; but for the man no helper was found corresponding to him.
21So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to come over the man, and he slept. God took one of his ribs and closed the flesh at that place.
22Then the Lord God made the rib he had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man.
24This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh.
25Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame.
2The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit from the trees in the garden.
3But about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God said, 'You must not eat it or touch it, or you will die.' "
4"No! You will certainly not die," the serpent said to the woman.
5"In fact, God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
6The woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
7Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
8Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
9So the Lord God called out to the man and said to him, "Where are you? "
14So the Lord God said to the serpent: Because you have done this, you are cursed more than any livestock and more than any wild animal. You will move on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life.
15I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.
17And he said to the man, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'Do not eat from it': The ground is cursed because of you. You will eat from it by means of painful labor all the days of your life.
18It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
19You will eat bread by the sweat of your brow until you return to the ground, since you were taken from it. For you are dust, and you will return to dust."
20The man named his wife Eve because she was the mother of all the living.
21The Lord God made clothing from skins for the man and his wife, and he clothed them.
22The Lord God said, "Since the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil, he must not reach out, take from the tree of life, eat, and live forever."
23So the Lord God sent him away from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken.
24He drove the man out and stationed the cherubim and the flaming, whirling sword east of the garden of Eden to guard the way to the tree of life.
Chapter 4
1The man was intimate with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. She said, "I have had a male child with the Lord's help." 2She also gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel became a shepherd of flocks, but Cain worked the ground. 3In the course of time Cain presented some of the land's produce as an offering to the Lord. 4And Abel also presented an offering--some of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. The Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, 5but he did not have regard for Cain and his offering. Cain was furious, and he looked despondent.
6Then the Lord said to Cain, "Why are you furious? And why do you look despondent?
7If you do what is right, won't you be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it."
10Then he said, "What have you done? Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground!
11So now you are cursed, alienated from the ground that opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood you have shed.
12If you work the ground, it will never again give you its yield. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth."
13But Cain answered the Lord, "My punishment is too great to bear!
14Since you are banishing me today from the face of the earth, and I must hide from your presence and become a restless wanderer on the earth, whoever finds me will kill me."
15Then the Lord replied to him, "In that case, whoever kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over." And he placed a mark on Cain so that whoever found him would not kill him.
16Then Cain went out from the Lord's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17Cain was intimate with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain became the builder of a city, and he named the city Enoch after his son.
18Irad was born to Enoch, Irad fathered Mehujael, Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech.
19Lamech took two wives for himself, one named Adah and the other named Zillah.
20Adah bore Jabal; he was the first of the nomadic herdsmen.
21His brother was named Jubal; he was the first of all who play the lyre and the flute.
22Zillah bore Tubal-cain, who made all kinds of bronze and iron tools. Tubal-cain's sister was Naamah.
23Lamech said to his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; wives of Lamech, pay attention to my words. For I killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me.
24If Cain is to be avenged seven times over, then for Lamech it will be seventy-seven times!
25Adam was intimate with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, for she said, "God has given me another offspring in place of Abel, since Cain killed him."
26A son was born to Seth also, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord.
Chapter 5
1This is the document containing the family records of Adam. On the day that God created man, he made him in the likeness of God; 2he created them male and female. When they were created, he blessed them and called them mankind.
3Adam was 130 years old when he fathered a son in his likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth.
4Adam lived 800 years after he fathered Seth, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
5So Adam's life lasted 930 years; then he died.
6Seth was 105 years old when he fathered Enosh.
7Seth lived 807 years after he fathered Enosh, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
8So Seth's life lasted 912 years; then he died.
9Enosh was 90 years old when he fathered Kenan.
10Enosh lived 815 years after he fathered Kenan, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
11So Enosh's life lasted 905 years; then he died.
12Kenan was 70 years old when he fathered Mahalalel.
13Kenan lived 840 years after he fathered Mahalalel, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
14So Kenan's life lasted 910 years; then he died.
15Mahalalel was 65 years old when he fathered Jared.
16Mahalalel lived 830 years after he fathered Jared, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
17So Mahalalel's life lasted 895 years; then he died.
18Jared was 162 years old when he fathered Enoch.
19Jared lived 800 years after he fathered Enoch, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
20So Jared's life lasted 962 years; then he died.
21Enoch was 65 years old when he fathered Methuselah.
22And after he fathered Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and fathered other sons and daughters.
23So Enoch's life lasted 365 years.
24Enoch walked with God; then he was not there because God took him.
25Methuselah was 187 years old when he fathered Lamech.
26Methuselah lived 782 years after he fathered Lamech, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
27So Methuselah's life lasted 969 years; then he died.
28Lamech was 182 years old when he fathered a son.
29And he named him Noah, saying, "This one will bring us relief from the agonizing labor of our hands, caused by the ground the Lord has cursed."
30Lamech lived 595 years after he fathered Noah, and he fathered other sons and daughters.
31So Lamech's life lasted 777 years; then he died.
Chapter 6
1When mankind began to multiply on the earth and daughters were born to them, 2the sons of God saw that the daughters of mankind were beautiful, and they took any they chose as wives for themselves. 3And the Lord said, "My Spirit will not remain with mankind forever, because they are corrupt. Their days will be 120 years." 4The Nephilim were on the earth both in those days and afterward, when the sons of God came to the daughters of mankind, who bore children to them. They were the powerful men of old, the famous men.
5When the Lord saw that human wickedness was widespread on the earth and that every inclination of the human mind was nothing but evil all the time,
6the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and he was deeply grieved.
7Then the Lord said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I created, off the face of the earth, together with the animals, creatures that crawl, and birds of the sky--for I regret that I made them."
8Noah, however, found favor with the Lord.
9These are the family records of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among his contemporaries; Noah walked with God.
10And Noah fathered three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled with wickedness.
12God saw how corrupt the earth was, for every creature had corrupted its way on the earth.
13Then God said to Noah, "I have decided to put an end to every creature, for the earth is filled with wickedness because of them; therefore I am going to destroy them along with the earth.
14"Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it with pitch inside and outside.
15This is how you are to make it: The ark will be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.
16You are to make a roof, finishing the sides of the ark to within eighteen inches of the roof. You are to put a door in the side of the ark. Make it with lower, middle, and upper decks.
17"Understand that I am bringing a flood--floodwaters on the earth to destroy every creature under heaven with the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish.
18But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark with your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives.
19You are also to bring into the ark two of all the living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you.
20Two of everything--from the birds according to their kinds, from the livestock according to their kinds, and from the animals that crawl on the ground according to their kinds--will come to you so that you can keep them alive.
21Take with you every kind of food that is eaten; gather it as food for you and for them."
22And Noah did this. He did everything that God had commanded him.
Chapter 7
1Then the Lord said to Noah, "Enter the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you alone are righteous before me in this generation. 2You are to take with you seven pairs, a male and its female, of all the clean animals, and two of the animals that are not clean, a male and its female, 3and seven pairs, male and female, of the birds of the sky--in order to keep offspring alive throughout the earth. 4Seven days from now I will make it rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and every living thing I have made I will wipe off the face of the earth." 5And Noah did everything that the Lord commanded him.
6Noah was six hundred years old when the flood came and water covered the earth.
7So Noah, his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives entered the ark because of the floodwaters.
8From the animals that are clean, and from the animals that are not clean, and from the birds and every creature that crawls on the ground,
9two of each, male and female, came to Noah and entered the ark, just as God had commanded him.
10Seven days later the floodwaters came on the earth.
11In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the sources of the vast watery depths burst open, the floodgates of the sky were opened,
12and the rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.
13On that same day Noah and his three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, entered the ark, along with Noah's wife and his three sons' wives.
14They entered it with all the wildlife according to their kinds, all livestock according to their kinds, all the creatures that crawl on the earth according to their kinds, every flying creature--all the birds and every winged creature--according to their kinds.
15Two of every creature that has the breath of life in it came to Noah and entered the ark.
16Those that entered, male and female of every creature, entered just as God had commanded him. Then the Lord shut him in.
17The flood continued for forty days on the earth; the water increased and lifted up the ark so that it rose above the earth.
18The water surged and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water.
19Then the water surged even higher on the earth, and all the high mountains under the whole sky were covered.
20The mountains were covered as the water surged above them more than twenty feet.
21Every creature perished--those that crawl on the earth, birds, livestock, wildlife, and those that swarm on the earth, as well as all mankind.
22Everything with the breath of the spirit of life in its nostrils--everything on dry land died.
23He wiped out every living thing that was on the face of the earth, from mankind to livestock, to creatures that crawl, to the birds of the sky, and they were wiped off the earth. Only Noah was left, and those that were with him in the ark.
24And the water surged on the earth 150 days.
Chapter 8
1God remembered Noah, as well as all the wildlife and all the livestock that were with him in the ark. God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water began to subside. 2The sources of the watery depths and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the rain from the sky stopped. 3The water steadily receded from the earth, and by the end of 150 days the water had decreased significantly. 4The ark came to rest in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat.
5The water continued to recede until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains were visible.
6After forty days Noah opened the window of the ark that he had made,
7and he sent out a raven. It went back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth.
8Then he sent out a dove to see whether the water on the earth's surface had gone down,
9but the dove found no resting place for its foot. It returned to him in the ark because water covered the surface of the whole earth. He reached out and brought it into the ark to himself.
10So Noah waited seven more days and sent out the dove from the ark again.
11When the dove came to him at evening, there was a plucked olive leaf in its beak. So Noah knew that the water on the earth's surface had gone down.
12After he had waited another seven days, he sent out the dove, but it did not return to him again.
13In the six hundred first year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the water that had covered the earth was dried up. Then Noah removed the ark's cover and saw that the surface of the ground was drying.
14By the twenty-seventh day of the second month, the earth was dry.
15Then God spoke to Noah,
16"Come out of the ark, you, your wife, your sons, and your sons' wives with you.
17Bring out all the living creatures that are with you--birds, livestock, those that crawl on the earth--and they will spread over the earth and be fruitful and multiply on the earth."
18So Noah, along with his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives, came out.
19All the animals, all the creatures that crawl, and all the flying creatures--everything that moves on the earth--came out of the ark by their families.
20Then Noah built an altar to the Lord. He took some of every kind of clean animal and every kind of clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
21When the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, he said to himself, "I will never again curse the ground because of human beings, even though the inclination of the human heart is evil from youth onward. And I will never again strike down every living thing as I have done.
New Living Translation
Chapter 1
1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
3Then God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light.
4And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness.
6Then God said, 'Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth.'
7And that is what happened. God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens.
9Then God said, 'Let the waters beneath the sky flow together into one place, so dry ground may appear.' And that is what happened.
10God called the dry ground 'land' and the waters 'seas.' And God saw that it was good.
11Then God said, 'Let the land sprout with vegetation — every sort of seed-bearing plant, and trees that grow seed-bearing fruit. These seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees from which they came.' And that is what happened.
12The land produced vegetation — all sorts of seed-bearing plants, and trees with seed-bearing fruit. Their seeds produced plants and trees of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.
14Then God said, 'Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them be signs to mark the seasons, days, and years.
15Let these lights in the sky shine down on the earth.' And that is what happened.
16God made two great lights — the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars.
17God set these lights in the sky to light the earth,
18to govern the day and night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
20Then God said, 'Let the waters swarm with fish and other life. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind.'
21So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that scurries and swarms in the water, and every sort of bird — each producing offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.
22Then God blessed them, saying, 'Be fruitful and multiply. Let the fish fill the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.'
24Then God said, 'Let the earth produce every sort of animal, each producing offspring of the same kind — livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and wild animals.' And that is what happened.
25God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.
29Then God said, 'Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food.
30And I have given every green plant as food for all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, and the small animals that scurry along the ground — everything that has life.' And that is what happened.
Chapter 2
1So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed. 2On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. 3And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.
4This is the account of the creation of the heavens and the earth. When the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
5neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the Lord God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil.
6Instead, springs came up from the ground and watered all the land.
7Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.
8Then the Lord God planted a garden in Eden in the east, and there he placed the man he had made.
9The Lord God made all sorts of trees grow up from the ground — trees that were beautiful and that produced delicious fruit. In the middle of the garden he placed the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10A river flowed from the land of Eden, watering the garden and then dividing into four branches.
11The first branch, called the Pishon, flowed around the entire land of Havilah, where gold is found.
12The gold of that land is exceptionally pure; aromatic resin and onyx stone are also found there.
13The second branch, called the Gihon, flowed around the entire land of Cush.
14The third branch, called the Tigris, flowed east of the land of Asshur. The fourth branch is called the Euphrates.
15The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it.
16But the Lord God warned him, 'You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden —
17except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.'
18Then the Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.'
19So the Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one.
20He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him.
21So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening.
22Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man.
2Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,' the woman replied.
3It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’'
4You won’t die!' the serpent replied to the woman.
5God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.'
6The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.
7At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.
8When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees.
9Then the Lord God called to the man, 'Where are you?'
14Then the Lord God said to the serpent, 'Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all animals, domestic and wild. You will crawl on your belly, groveling in the dust as long as you live.
15And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.'
17And to the man he said, 'Since you listened to your wife and ate from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat, the ground is cursed because of you. All your life you will struggle to scratch a living from it.
18It will grow thorns and thistles for you, though you will eat of its grains.
19By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made. For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return.'
20Then the man — Adam — named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of all who live.
21And the Lord God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife.
22Then the Lord God said, 'Look, the human beings have become like us, knowing both good and evil. What if they reach out, take fruit from the tree of life, and eat it? Then they will live forever!'
23So the Lord God banished them from the Garden of Eden, and he sent Adam out to cultivate the ground from which he had been made.
24After sending them out, the Lord God stationed mighty cherubim to the east of the Garden of Eden. And he placed a flaming sword that flashed back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
2Later she gave birth to his brother and named him Abel. When they grew up, Abel became a shepherd, while Cain cultivated the ground.
3When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the Lord.
4Abel also brought a gift — the best portions of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The Lord accepted Abel and his gift,
5but he did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected.
6Why are you so angry?' the Lord asked Cain. 'Why do you look so dejected?
7You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.'
10But the Lord said, 'What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground!
11Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has swallowed your brother’s blood.
12No longer will the ground yield good crops for you, no matter how hard you work! From now on you will be a homeless wanderer on the earth.'
13Cain replied to the Lord, 'My punishment is too great for me to bear!
14You have banished me from the land and from your presence; you have made me a homeless wanderer. Anyone who finds me will kill me!'
15The Lord replied, 'No, for I will give a sevenfold punishment to anyone who kills you.' Then the Lord put a mark on Cain to warn anyone who might try to kill him.
16So Cain left the Lord’s presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17Cain had sexual relations with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain founded a city, which he named Enoch, after his son.
18Enoch had a son named Irad. Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech.
19Lamech married two women. The first was named Adah, and the second was Zillah.
20Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the first of those who raise livestock and live in tents.
21His brother’s name was Jubal, the first of all who play the harp and flute.
22Lamech’s other wife, Zillah, gave birth to a son named Tubal-cain. He became an expert in forging tools of bronze and iron. Tubal-cain had a sister named Naamah.
23One day Lamech said to his wives, 'Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; listen to me, you wives of Lamech. I have killed a man who attacked me, a young man who wounded me.
24If someone who kills Cain is punished seven times, then the one who kills me will be punished seventy-seven times!'
25Adam had sexual relations with his wife again, and she gave birth to another son. She named him Seth, for she said, 'God has granted me another son in place of Abel, whom Cain killed.'
26When Seth grew up, he had a son and named him Enosh. At that time people first began to worship the Lord by name.
Chapter 5
1This is the written account of the descendants of Adam. When God created human beings, he made them to be like himself. 2He created them male and female, and he blessed them and called them 'human.'
3When Adam was 130 years old, he became the father of a son who was just like him — in his very image. He named his son Seth.
4After the birth of Seth, Adam lived another 800 years, and he had other sons and daughters.
5Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.
6When Seth was 105 years old, he became the father of Enosh.
7After the birth of Enosh, Seth lived another 807 years, and he had other sons and daughters.
8Seth lived 912 years, and then he died.
9When Enosh was 90 years old, he became the father of Kenan.
10After the birth of Kenan, Enosh lived another 815 years, and he had other sons and daughters.
11Enosh lived 905 years, and then he died.
12When Kenan was 70 years old, he became the father of Mahalalel.
13After the birth of Mahalalel, Kenan lived another 840 years, and he had other sons and daughters.
14Kenan lived 910 years, and then he died.
15When Mahalalel was 65 years old, he became the father of Jared.
16After the birth of Jared, Mahalalel lived another 830 years, and he had other sons and daughters.
17Mahalalel lived 895 years, and then he died.
18When Jared was 162 years old, he became the father of Enoch.
19After the birth of Enoch, Jared lived another 800 years, and he had other sons and daughters.
20Jared lived 962 years, and then he died.
21When Enoch was 65 years old, he became the father of Methuselah.
22After the birth of Methuselah, Enoch lived in close fellowship with God for another 300 years, and he had other sons and daughters.
23Enoch lived 365 years,
24walking in close fellowship with God. Then one day he disappeared, because God took him.
25When Methuselah was 187 years old, he became the father of Lamech.
26After the birth of Lamech, Methuselah lived another 782 years, and he had other sons and daughters.
27Methuselah lived 969 years, and then he died.
28When Lamech was 182 years old, he became the father of a son.
29Lamech named his son Noah, for he said, 'May he bring us relief from our work and the painful labor of farming this ground that the Lord has cursed.'
30After the birth of Noah, Lamech lived another 595 years, and he had other sons and daughters.
31Lamech lived 777 years, and then he died.
Chapter 6
1Then the people began to multiply on the earth, and daughters were born to them. 2The sons of God saw the beautiful women and took any they wanted as their wives. 3Then the Lord said, 'My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years.'
5The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.
6So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart.
7And the Lord said, 'I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing — all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.'
8But Noah found favor with the Lord.
9This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.
10Noah was the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence.
12God observed all this corruption in the world, for everyone on earth was corrupt.
13So God said to Noah, 'I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along with the earth!
14Build a large boat from cypress wood and waterproof it with tar, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior.
15Make the boat 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.
16Leave an 18-inch opening below the roof all the way around the boat. Put the door on the side, and build three decks inside the boat — lower, middle, and upper.
17Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die.
18But I will confirm my covenant with you. So enter the boat — you and your wife and your sons and their wives.
19Bring a pair of every kind of animal — a male and a female — into the boat with you to keep them alive during the flood.
20Pairs of every kind of bird, and every kind of animal, and every kind of small animal that scurries along the ground, will come to you to be kept alive.
21And be sure to take on board enough food for your family and for all the animals.'
Chapter 7
1When everything was ready, the Lord said to Noah, 'Go into the boat with all your family, for among all the people of the earth, I can see that you alone are righteous. 2Take with you seven pairs — male and female — of each animal I have approved for eating and for sacrifice, and take one pair of each of the others. 3Also take seven pairs of every kind of bird. There must be a male and a female in each pair to ensure that all life will survive on the earth after the flood. 4Seven days from now I will make the rains pour down on the earth. And it will rain for forty days and forty nights, until I have wiped from the earth all the living things I have created.'
6Noah was 600 years old when the flood covered the earth.
7He went on board the boat to escape the flood — he and his wife and his sons and their wives.
8With them were all the various kinds of animals — those approved for eating and for sacrifice and those that were not — along with all the birds and the small animals that scurry along the ground.
9They entered the boat in pairs, male and female, just as God had commanded Noah.
10After seven days, the waters of the flood came and covered the earth.
11When Noah was 600 years old, on the seventeenth day of the second month, all the underground waters erupted from the earth, and the rain fell in mighty torrents from the sky.
12The rain continued to fall for forty days and forty nights.
13That very day Noah had gone into the boat with his wife and his sons — Shem, Ham, and Japheth — and their wives.
14With them in the boat were pairs of every kind of animal — domestic and wild, large and small — along with birds of every kind.
15Two by two they came into the boat, representing every living thing that breathes.
16A male and female of each kind entered, just as God had commanded Noah. Then the Lord closed the door behind them.
17For forty days the floodwaters grew deeper, covering the ground and lifting the boat high above the earth.
18As the waters rose higher and higher above the ground, the boat floated safely on the surface.
19Finally, the water covered even the highest mountains on the earth,
20rising more than twenty-two feet above the highest peaks.
21All the living things on earth died — birds, domestic animals, wild animals, small animals that scurry along the ground, and all the people.
22Everything that breathed and lived on dry land died.
23God wiped out every living thing on the earth — people, livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and the birds of the sky. All were destroyed. The only people who survived were Noah and those with him in the boat.
24And the floodwaters covered the earth for 150 days.
Chapter 8
1But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and livestock with him in the boat. He sent a wind to blow across the earth, and the floodwaters began to recede. 2The underground waters stopped flowing, and the torrential rains from the sky were stopped. 3So the floodwaters gradually receded from the earth. After 150 days, 4exactly five months from the time the flood began, the boat came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. 5Two and a half months later, as the waters continued to go down, other mountain peaks became visible.
6After another forty days, Noah opened the window he had made in the boat
7and released a raven. The bird flew back and forth until the floodwaters on the earth had dried up.
8He also released a dove to see if the water had receded and it could find dry ground.
9But the dove could find no place to land because the water still covered the ground. So it returned to the boat, and Noah held out his hand and drew the dove back inside.
10After waiting another seven days, Noah released the dove again.
11This time the dove returned to him in the evening with a fresh olive leaf in its beak. Then Noah knew that the floodwaters were almost gone.
12He waited another seven days and then released the dove again. This time it did not come back.
13Noah was now 601 years old. On the first day of the new year, ten and a half months after the flood began, the floodwaters had almost dried up from the earth. Noah lifted back the covering of the boat and saw that the surface of the ground was drying.
14Two more months went by, and at last the earth was dry!
15Then God said to Noah,
16Leave the boat, all of you — you and your wife, and your sons and their wives.
17Release all the animals — the birds, the livestock, and the small animals that scurry along the ground — so they can be fruitful and multiply throughout the earth.'
18So Noah, his wife, and his sons and their wives left the boat.
19And all of the large and small animals and birds came out of the boat, pair by pair.
20Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and there he sacrificed as burnt offerings the animals and birds that had been approved for that purpose.
21And the Lord was pleased with the aroma of the sacrifice and said to himself, 'I will never again curse the ground because of the human race, even though everything they think or imagine is bent toward evil from childhood. I will never again destroy all living things.
22As long as the earth remains, there will be planting and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night.'
English Standard Version
Chapter 1
1In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
3And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
4And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.
5God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
6And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.”
7And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so.
8And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.
9And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so.
10God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.
11And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so.
12The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
13And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.
14And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years,
15and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so.
16And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.
17And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,
18to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
19And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.
20And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.”
21So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
22And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”
23And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.
24And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.
25And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
28And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
29And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.
30And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.
31And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
Chapter 2
1Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.
4These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.
5When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the LORD God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground,
6and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground—
7then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
8And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed.
9And out of the ground the LORD God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers.
11The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
12And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there.
13The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush.
14And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
16And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden,
17but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
18Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
19Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.
20The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.
21So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.
22And the rib that the LORD God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.
23Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”
24Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
25And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
2And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden,
3but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”
4But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.
5For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
7Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
8And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
9But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”
10And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”
11He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
12The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.”
13Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
15I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
16To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to husband, but he shall rule over you.”
18thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field.
19By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
20The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
21And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
22Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—”
23therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken.
24He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
Chapter 4
1Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.” 2And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. 3In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, 4and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, 5but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. 6The LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? 7If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.”
8Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
9Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?”
10And the LORD said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground.
11And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
12When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”
13Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.
14Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
15Then the LORD said to him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the LORD put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him.
16Then Cain went away from the presence of the LORD and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. When he built a city, he called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch.
18To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech.
19And Lamech took two wives. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
20Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.
21His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe.
22Zillah also bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
24If Cain’s revenge is sevenfold, then Lamech’s is seventy-sevenfold.”
25And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”
26To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the LORD.
Chapter 5
1This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. 2Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created. 3When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters. 5Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died.
6When Seth had lived 105 years, he fathered Enosh.
7Seth lived after he fathered Enosh 807 years and had other sons and daughters.
8Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died.
9When Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan.
10Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan 815 years and had other sons and daughters.
11Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.
12When Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel.
13Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and daughters.
14Thus all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died.
15When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he fathered Jared.
16Mahalalel lived after he fathered Jared 830 years and had other sons and daughters.
17Thus all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died.
18When Jared had lived 162 years, he fathered Enoch.
19Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years and had other sons and daughters.
20Thus all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.
21When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah.
22Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters.
23Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years.
24Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.
25When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech.
26Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech 782 years and had other sons and daughters.
27Thus all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died.
28When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son
29and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground that the LORD has cursed, this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.”
30Lamech lived after he fathered Noah 595 years and had other sons and daughters.
31Thus all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.
Chapter 6
1When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, 2the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. 3Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” 4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.
5The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6And the LORD regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.
7So the LORD said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.”
8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
9These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.
10And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight, and the earth was filled with violence.
12And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.
13And God said to Noah, “I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth.
14Make yourself an ark of gopher wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch.
15This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark 300 cubits, its breadth 50 cubits, and its height 30 cubits.
16Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above, and set the door of the ark in its side. Make it with lower, second, and third decks.
17For behold, I will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life under heaven. Everything that is on the earth shall die.
18But I will establish my covenant with you, and you shall come into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.
19And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female.
20Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground, according to its kind, two of every sort shall come in to you to keep them alive.
21Also take with you every sort of food that is eaten, and store it up. It shall serve as food for you and for them.”
22Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.
Chapter 7
1Then the LORD said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation. 2Take with you seven pairs of all clean animals, the male and his mate, and a pair of the animals that are not clean, the male and his mate, 3and seven pairs of the birds of the heavens also, male and female, to keep their offspring alive on the face of all the earth. 4For in seven days I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and every living thing that I have made I will blot out from the face of the ground.” 5And Noah did all that the LORD had commanded him.
6Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters came upon the earth.
7And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him went into the ark to escape the waters of the flood.
8Of clean animals, and of animals that are not clean, and of birds, and of everything that creeps on the ground,
9two and two, male and female, went into the ark with Noah, as God had commanded Noah.
10And after seven days the waters of the flood came upon the earth.
11In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened.
12And rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
13On the very same day Noah and his sons, Shem and Ham and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them entered the ark,
14they and every beast, according to its kind, and all the livestock according to their kinds, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, according to its kind, and every bird, according to its kind, every winged creature.
15They went into the ark with Noah, two and two of all flesh in which there was the breath of life.
16And those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him. And the LORD shut him in.
17The flood continued forty days on the earth. The waters increased and bore up the ark, and it rose high above the earth.
18The waters prevailed and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the face of the waters.
19And the waters prevailed so mightily on the earth that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered.
20The waters prevailed above the mountains, covering them fifteen cubits deep.
21And all flesh died that moved on the earth, birds, livestock, beasts, all swarming creatures that swarm on the earth, and all mankind.
22Everything on the dry land in whose nostrils was the breath of life died.
23He blotted out every living thing that was on the face of the ground, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens. They were blotted out from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ark.
24And the waters prevailed on the earth 150 days.
Chapter 8
1But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the livestock that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided. 2The fountains of the deep and the windows of the heavens were closed, the rain from the heavens was restrained, 3and the waters receded from the earth continually. At the end of 150 days the waters had abated, 4and in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. 5And the waters continued to abate until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains were seen.
6At the end of forty days Noah opened the window of the ark that he had made
7and sent forth a raven. It went to and fro until the waters were dried up from the earth.
8Then he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters had subsided from the face of the ground.
9But the dove found no place to set her foot, and she returned to him to the ark, for the waters were still on the face of the whole earth. So he put out his hand and took her and brought her into the ark with him.
10He waited another seven days, and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark.
11And the dove came back to him in the evening, and behold, in her mouth was a freshly plucked olive leaf. So Noah knew that the waters had subsided from the earth.
12Then he waited another seven days and sent forth the dove, and she did not return to him anymore.
13In the six hundred and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried from off the earth. And Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and behold, the face of the ground was dry.
14In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth had dried out.
15Then God said to Noah,
16“Go out from the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons’ wives with you.
17Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh—birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth—that they may swarm on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.”
18So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him.
19Every beast, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out by families from the ark.
20Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
21And when the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma, the LORD said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done.
22While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.”

Chapter 1
1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light.
4God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.
5God called the light 'day,' and the darkness he called 'night.' And there was evening, and there was morning--the first day.
6And God said, 'Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.'
7So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so.
8God called the vault 'sky.' And there was evening, and there was morning--the second day.
9And God said, 'Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.' And it was so.
10God called the dry ground 'land,' and the gathered waters he called 'seas.' And God saw that it was good.
11Then God said, 'Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.' And it was so.
12The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
13And there was evening, and there was morning--the third day.
14And God said, 'Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years,
15and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.' And it was so.
16God made two great lights--the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.
17God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth,
18to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.
19And there was evening, and there was morning--the fourth day.
20And God said, 'Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.'
21So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
22God blessed them and said, 'Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.'
23And there was evening, and there was morning--the fifth day.
24And God said, 'Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.' And it was so.
25God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.
29Then God said, 'I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.
30And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground--everything that has the breath of life in it--I give every green plant for food.' And it was so.
2By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.
3Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
5Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground,
6but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
7Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
8Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed.
9The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground--trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters.
11The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold.
12(The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.)
13The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.
14The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
16And the LORD God commanded the man, 'You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;
17but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.'
20So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
21So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and then closed up the place with flesh.
22Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
2The woman said to the serpent, 'We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,
3but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.''
4You will not certainly die,' the serpent said to the woman.
5For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.'
6When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
7Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
8Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
9But the LORD God called to the man, 'Where are you?'
14So the LORD God said to the serpent, 'Because you have done this, 'Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.
15And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.'
17To Adam he said, 'Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat from it,' 'Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.
18It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
19By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.'
21The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.
22And the LORD God said, 'The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.'
23So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
24After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
2Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.
3In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD.
4And Abel also brought an offering--fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
5but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
6Then the LORD said to Cain, 'Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?
7If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.'
10The LORD said, 'What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground.
11Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
12When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.'
13Cain said to the LORD, 'My punishment is more than I can bear.
14Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.'
15But the LORD said to him, 'Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.' Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.
16So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.
18To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.
19Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.
20Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.
21His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes.
22Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.
23Lamech said to his wives, 'Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me.
24If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times.'
Chapter 5
1This is the written account of Adam's family line. When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God. 2He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them 'Mankind' when they were created.
3When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth.
4After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters.
5Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.
6When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father of Enosh.
7After he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters.
8Altogether, Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.
9When Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan.
10After he became the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters.
11Altogether, Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died.
12When Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel.
13After he became the father of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters.
14Altogether, Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died.
15When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared.
16After he became the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters.
17Altogether, Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died.
18When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch.
19After he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters.
20Altogether, Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died.
21When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah.
22After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters.
23Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years.
24Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.
25When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech.
26After he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters.
27Altogether, Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.
28When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son.
29He named him Noah and said, 'He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the LORD has cursed.'
30After Noah was born, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters.
31Altogether, Lamech lived a total of 777 years, and then he died.
Chapter 6
1When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, 2the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. 3Then the LORD said, 'My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.'
5The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.
6The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.
7So the LORD said, 'I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created--and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground--for I regret that I have made them.'
8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
9This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.
10Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.
11Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight and was full of violence.
12God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.
13So God said to Noah, 'I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.
14So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out.
15This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.
16Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit high all around. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks.
17I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish.
18But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark--you and your sons and your wife and your sons' wives with you.
19You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you.
20Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive.
21You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.'
Chapter 7
1The LORD then said to Noah, 'Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation. 2Take with you seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and one pair of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, 3and also seven pairs of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth. 4Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made.'
6Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters came on the earth.
7And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood.
8Pairs of clean and unclean animals, of birds and of all creatures that move along the ground,
9male and female, came to Noah and entered the ark, as God had commanded Noah.
10And after the seven days the floodwaters came on the earth.
11In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, on the seventeenth day of the second month--on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.
12And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.
13On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark.
14They had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along the ground according to its kind and every bird according to its kind, everything with wings.
15Pairs of all creatures that have the breath of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark.
16The animals going in were male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded Noah. Then the LORD shut him in.
17For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth.
18The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water.
19They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered.
20The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits.
21Every living thing that moved on land perished--birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind.
22Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died.
23Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; people and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark.
Chapter 8
1But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded. 2Now the springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens had been closed, and the rain had stopped falling from the sky. 3The water receded steadily from the earth. At the end of the hundred and fifty days the water had gone down, 4and on the seventeenth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. 5The waters continued to recede until the tenth month, and on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains became visible.
6After forty days Noah opened a window he had made in the ark
7and sent out a raven, and it kept flying back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth.
8Then he sent out a dove to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground.
9But the dove could find nowhere to perch because there was water over all the surface of the earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark. He reached out his hand and took the dove and brought it back to himself in the ark.
10He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark.
11When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth.
12He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not return to him.
13By the first day of the first month of Noah's six hundred and first year, the water had dried up from the earth. Noah then removed the covering from the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was dry.
14By the twenty-seventh day of the second month the earth was completely dry.
15Then God said to Noah,
16Come out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and their wives.
17Bring out every kind of living creature that is with you--the birds, the animals, and all the creatures that move along the ground--so they can multiply on the earth and be fruitful and increase in number on it.'
18So Noah came out, together with his sons and his wife and his sons' wives.
19All the animals and all the creatures that move along the ground and all the birds--everything that moves on land--came out of the ark, one kind after another.
20Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it.
21The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: 'Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.
