Genesis 36:17
ESV These are the sons of Reuel, Esau’s son: the chiefs Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah; these are the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Basemath, Esau’s wife.
NIV The sons of Esau's son Reuel: Chiefs Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. These were the chiefs descended from Reuel in Edom; they were grandsons of Esau's wife Basemath.

What does Genesis 36:17 mean?

This is part of a list noting the "chiefs" among the sons and grandsons of Esau. This includes most of the names already given (Genesis 36:9–14) when listing Esau's sons and grandsons according to their birth mothers.

These chiefs are probably tribal leaders of Edom. They include Reuel's sons Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah.
