And he said, 'While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who knows, the
Lord
may be gracious to me, and the child may live.’
23
But now he has died; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I am going to him, but he will not return to me.'

whether
GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?

But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.

He answered, "While the baby was alive, I fasted and wept because I thought, 'Who knows? The Lord may be gracious to me and let him live.'

But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I'll go to him, but he will never return to me."

Lord
will be gracious to me and let the child live.’
