2 Samuel 12:17-22
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 12
17
The elders of his household stood beside him in order to help him up from the ground, but he was unwilling and would not eat food with them.
18
Then it happened on the seventh day that the child died. And David’s servants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, 'Behold, while the child was
still
alive, we spoke to him and he did not listen to us. How then can we tell him that the child is dead, since he might do
himself
harm?'
19
But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; so David said to his servants, 'Is the child dead?' And they said, 'He is dead.'
20
So David got up from the ground, washed, anointed
himself,
and changed his clothes; and he went into the house of the
Lord
and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and when he asked, they served him food, and he ate.
21
Then his servants said to him, 'What is this thing that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child
while he was
alive; but when the child died, you got up and ate food.'
22
And he said, 'While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who knows, the
Lord
may be gracious to me, and the child may live.’
King James Version
Chapter 12
17
And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.
18
And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?
19
But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.
20
Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the
Lord
, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.
21
Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.
22
And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether
God
will be gracious to me, that the child may live?

Chapter 12
17
The elders of his house stood beside him to get him up from the ground, but he was unwilling and would not eat anything with them.
18
On the seventh day the baby died. But David’s servants were afraid to tell him the baby was dead. They said, "Look, while the baby was alive, we spoke to him, and he wouldn’t listen to us. So how can we tell him the baby is dead? He may do something desperate."
19
When David saw that his servants were whispering to each other, he guessed that the baby was dead. So he asked his servants, "Is the baby dead?" "He is dead," they replied.
20
Then David got up from the ground. He washed, anointed himself, changed his clothes, went to the
Lord
’s house, and worshiped. Then he went home and requested something to eat. So they served him food, and he ate.
21
His servants asked him, "Why have you done this? While the baby was alive, you fasted and wept, but when he died, you got up and ate food."
22
He answered, "While the baby was alive, I fasted and wept because I thought, ‘Who knows? The
Lord
may be gracious to me and let him live.’
New Living Translation
Chapter 12
17
The elders of his household pleaded with him to get up and eat with them, but he refused.
18
Then on the seventh day the child died. David’s advisers were afraid to tell him. 'He wouldn’t listen to reason while the child was ill,' they said. 'What drastic thing will he do when we tell him the child is dead?'
19
When David saw them whispering, he realized what had happened. 'Is the child dead?' he asked. 'Yes,' they replied, 'he is dead.'
20
Then David got up from the ground, washed himself, put on lotions, and changed his clothes. He went to the Tabernacle and worshiped the
Lord
. After that, he returned to the palace and was served food and ate.
21
His advisers were amazed. 'We don’t understand you,' they told him. 'While the child was still living, you wept and refused to eat. But now that the child is dead, you have stopped your mourning and are eating again.'
22
David replied, 'I fasted and wept while the child was alive, for I said, ‘Perhaps the
Lord
will be gracious to me and let the child live.’
