Genesis 35:16-20
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 35
16
Then they journeyed on from Bethel; but when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and she suffered severe difficulties in her labor.
17
And when she was suffering severe difficulties in her labor, the midwife said to her, 'Do not fear, for you have another son!'
18
And it came about, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she named him Ben-oni; but his father called him Benjamin.
19
So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).
20
And Jacob set up a memorial stone over her grave; that is the memorial stone of Rachel’s grave to this day.
King James Version
Chapter 35
16
And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour.
17
And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.
18
And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.
19
And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.
20
And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 35
16
They set out from Bethel. When they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth, and her labor was difficult.
17
During her difficult labor, the midwife said to her, "Don’t be afraid, for you have another son."
18
With her last breath—for she was dying—she named him Ben-oni, but his father called him Benjamin.
19
So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem ).
20
Jacob set up a marker on her grave; it is the marker at Rachel’s grave still today.
New Living Translation
Chapter 35
16
Leaving Bethel, Jacob and his clan moved on toward Ephrath. But Rachel went into labor while they were still some distance away. Her labor pains were intense.
17
After a very hard delivery, the midwife finally exclaimed, 'Don’t be afraid — you have another son!'
18
Rachel was about to die, but with her last breath she named the baby Ben-oni (which means 'son of my sorrow'). The baby’s father, however, called him Benjamin (which means 'son of my right hand').
19
So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).
20
Jacob set up a stone monument over Rachel’s grave, and it can be seen there to this day.
English Standard Version
