New American Standard Bible
Chapter 3
21
Abner said to David, 'Let me set out and go and gather all Israel to my lord the king, so that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may be king over all that your soul desires.' So David let Abner go, and he went in peace.
22
And behold, the servants of David and Joab came from a raid and brought a large amount of plunder with them; but Abner was not with David in Hebron, since he had let him go, and he had gone in peace.
King James Version
Chapter 3
21
And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.
22
And, behold, the servants of David and Joab came from
pursuing
a troop, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner
was
not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace.

22
Just then David's soldiers and Joab returned from a raid and brought a large amount of plundered goods with them. Abner was not with David in Hebron because David had dismissed him, and he had gone in peace.

22
But just after David had sent Abner away in safety, Joab and some of David’s troops returned from a raid, bringing much plunder with them.
