2 Samuel 3:34-36
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 3
34
Your hands were not bound, nor your feet put in bronze shackles;
As one falls before the wicked, you have fallen.'
And all the people wept over him again.
35
Then all the people came to provide food for David
in his distress
while it was still day; but David vowed, saying, 'May God do so to me, and more so, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun goes down.'
36
Now all the people took note
of David’s vow,
and it pleased them, just as everything that the king did pleased all the people.
King James Version
Chapter 3
34
Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into fetters: as a man falleth before wicked men, so fellest thou. And all the people wept again over him.
35
And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down.
36
And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them: as whatsoever the king did pleased all the people.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 3
34
Your hands were not bound,
your feet not placed in bronze shackles.
You fell like one who falls victim to criminals.
And all the people wept over him even more.
35
Then they came to urge David to eat food while it was still day, but David took an oath: "May God punish me and do so severely if I taste bread or anything else before sunset!"
36
All the people took note of this, and it pleased them. In fact, everything the king did pleased them.
New Living Translation
Chapter 3
34
Your hands were not bound;
your feet were not chained.
No, you were murdered —
the victim of a wicked plot.'
All the people wept again for Abner.
35
David had refused to eat anything on the day of the funeral, and now everyone begged him to eat. But David had made a vow, saying, 'May God strike me and even kill me if I eat anything before sundown.'
36
This pleased the people very much. In fact, everything the king did pleased them!
English Standard Version
Chapter 3
34
Your hands were not bound;
your feet were not fettered;
as one falls before the wicked
you have fallen."
And all the people wept again over him.
35
Then all the people came to persuade David to eat bread while it was yet day. But David swore, saying, "God do so to me and more also, if I taste bread or anything else till the sun goes down!"
36
And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them, as everything that the king did pleased all the people.
New International Version
Chapter 3
34
Your hands were not bound,
your feet were not fettered.
You fell as one falls before the wicked."
And all the people wept over him again.
35
Then they all came and urged David to eat something while it was still day; but David took an oath, saying, "May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets!"
36
All the people took note and were pleased; indeed, everything the king did pleased them.
New King James Version
Chapter 3
34
Your hands were not bound
Nor your feet put into fetters;
As a man falls before wicked men,
so
you fell.”
Then all the people wept over him again.
35
And when all the people came to persuade David to eat food while it was still day, David took an oath, saying, “God do so to me, and more also, if I taste bread or anything else till the sun goes down!”
36
Now all the people took note
of it,
and it pleased them, since whatever the king did pleased all the people.
