2 Samuel 16:21-23
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 16
21
Ahithophel said to Absalom, 'Have relations with your father’s concubines, whom he has left behind to take care of the house; then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself repulsive to your father. The hands of all who are with you will also be strengthened.'
22
So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and Absalom had relations with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.
23
Now the advice of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days,
was taken
as though one inquired of the word of God; so
was
all the advice of Ahithophel
regarded
by both David and Absalom.
King James Version
Chapter 16
21
And Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Go in unto thy father's concubines, which he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel shall hear that thou art abhorred of thy father: then shall the hands of all that are with thee be strong.
22
So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of the house; and Absalom went in unto his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel.
23
And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counselled in those days, was as if a man had enquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 16
21
Ahithophel replied to Absalom, "Sleep with your father’s concubines whom he left to take care of the palace. When all Israel hears that you have become repulsive to your father, everyone with you will be encouraged."
22
So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he slept with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.
23
Now the advice Ahithophel gave in those days was like someone asking about a word from God —such was the regard that both David and Absalom had for Ahithophel’s advice.
New Living Translation
Chapter 16
21
Ahithophel told him, 'Go and sleep with your father’s concubines, for he has left them here to look after the palace. Then all Israel will know that you have insulted your father beyond hope of reconciliation, and they will throw their support to you.'
22
So they set up a tent on the palace roof where everyone could see it, and Absalom went in and had sex with his father’s concubines.
23
Absalom followed Ahithophel’s advice, just as David had done. For every word Ahithophel spoke seemed as wise as though it had come directly from the mouth of God.
English Standard Version
Chapter 16
21
Ahithophel said to Absalom, "Go in to your father 's concubines, whom he has left to keep the house, and all Israel will hear that you have made yourself a stench to your father, and the hands of all who are with you will be strengthened."
22
So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof. And Absalom went in to his father 's concubines in the sight of all Israel.
23
Now in those days the counsel that Ahithophel gave was as if one consulted the word of God; so was all the counsel of Ahithophel esteemed, both by David and by Absalom.
New International Version
Chapter 16
21
Ahithophel answered, "Sleep with your father’s concubines whom he left to take care of the palace. Then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself obnoxious to your father, and the hands of everyone with you will be more resolute."
22
So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he slept with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.
23
Now in those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God. That was how both David and Absalom regarded all of Ahithophel’s advice.
New King James Version
Chapter 16
21
And Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Go in to your father’s concubines, whom he has left to keep the house; and all Israel will hear that you are abhorred by your father. Then the hands of all who are with you will be strong.”
22
So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the top of the house, and Absalom went in to his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.
23
Now the advice of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days,
was
as if one had inquired at the oracle of God. So
was
all the advice of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.
