So it was as Joab kept watch on the city, that he stationed Uriah at the place where he knew there
were
valiant men.
17
And the men of the city went out and fought against Joab, and some of the people among David’s servants fell; and Uriah the Hittite also died.

And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell

of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

When Joab was besieging the city, he put Uriah in the place where he knew the best enemy soldiers were.
17
Then the men of the city came out and attacked Joab, and some of the men from David's soldiers fell in battle; Uriah the Hethite also died.
New Living Translation

So Joab assigned Uriah to a spot close to the city wall where he knew the enemy’s strongest men were fighting.

And when the enemy soldiers came out of the city to fight, Uriah the Hittite was killed along with several other Israelite soldiers.
