2 Samuel 11:22-27
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 11
22
So the messenger departed and came and reported to David everything that Joab had sent him
to tell.
23
The messenger said to David, 'The men prevailed against us and came out against us in the field, but we pressed them as far as the entrance of the gate.
24
Also, the archers shot at your servants from the wall; so some of the king’s servants died, and your servant Uriah the Hittite also died.'
25
Then David said to the messenger, 'This is what you shall say to Joab: ‘Do not let this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another; fight with determination against the city and overthrow it’; and
thereby
encourage him.'
26
Now when Uriah’s wife heard that her husband Uriah was dead, she mourned for her husband.
27
When the
time of
mourning was over, David sent
servants
and had her brought to his house and she became his wife; then she bore him a son. But the thing that David had done was evil in the sight of the
Lord
.
King James Version
Chapter 11
22
So the messenger went, and came and shewed David all that Joab had sent him for.
23
And the messenger said unto David, Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entering of the gate.
24
And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants; and some of the king's servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
25
Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.
26
And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.
27
And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the
Lord

Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 11
22
Then the messenger left. When he arrived, he reported to David all that Joab had sent him to tell.
23
The messenger reported to David, "The men gained the advantage over us and came out against us in the field, but we counterattacked right up to the entrance of the city gate.
24
However, the archers shot down on your servants from the top of the wall, and some of the king’s servants died. Your servant Uriah the Hethite is also dead."
25
David told the messenger, "Say this to Joab: ‘Don’t let this matter upset you because the sword devours all alike. Intensify your fight against the city and demolish it.’ Encourage him."
26
When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband Uriah had died, she mourned for him.
27
When the time of mourning ended, David had her brought to his house. She became his wife and bore him a son. However, the
Lord
considered what David had done to be evil.
New Living Translation
Chapter 11
22
So the messenger went to Jerusalem and gave a complete report to David.
23
The enemy came out against us in the open fields,' he said. 'And as we chased them back to the city gate,
24
the archers on the wall shot arrows at us. Some of the king’s men were killed, including Uriah the Hittite.'
25
Well, tell Joab not to be discouraged,' David said. 'The sword devours this one today and that one tomorrow! Fight harder next time, and conquer the city!'
26
When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him.
27
When the period of mourning was over, David sent for her and brought her to the palace, and she became one of his wives. Then she gave birth to a son. But the
Lord
was displeased with what David had done.
