2 Samuel 10:10-16
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 10
10
But the remainder of the people he placed under the command of his brother Abishai, and he lined
them
up against the sons of Ammon.
11
And he said, 'If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the sons of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come to help you.
12
Be strong, and let’s show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and the cities of our God; and may the
Lord
do what is good in His sight.'
13
So Joab and the people who were with him advanced to the battle against the Arameans, and they fled from him.
14
When the sons of Ammon saw that the Arameans had fled, they
also
fled from Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab returned from
fighting
against the sons of Ammon and came to Jerusalem.
15
When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they assembled together.
16
And Hadadezer sent
word
and brought out the Arameans who were beyond the
Euphrates
River, and they came to Helam; and Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer led them.
King James Version
Chapter 10
10
And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon.
11
And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.
12
Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the
Lord
do that which seemeth him good.
13
And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
14
And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
15
And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.
16
And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 10
10
He placed the rest of the forces under the command of his brother Abishai. They lined up in formation to engage the Ammonites.
11
"If the Arameans are too strong for me," Joab said, "then you will be my help. However, if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I’ll come to help you.
12
Be strong! Let’s prove ourselves strong for our people and for the cities of our God. May the
Lord
’s will be done."
13
Joab and his troops advanced to fight against the Arameans, and they fled before him.
14
When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they too fled before Abishai and entered the city. So Joab withdrew from the attack against the Ammonites and went to Jerusalem.
15
When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they regrouped.
16
Hadadezer sent messengers to bring the Arameans who were beyond the Euphrates River, and they came to Helam with Shobach, commander of Hadadezer’s army, leading them.
New Living Translation
Chapter 10
10
He left the rest of the army under the command of his brother Abishai, who was to attack the Ammonites.
11
If the Arameans are too strong for me, then come over and help me,' Joab told his brother. 'And if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I will come and help you.
12
Be courageous! Let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. May the
Lord
’s will be done.'
13
When Joab and his troops attacked, the Arameans began to run away.
14
And when the Ammonites saw the Arameans running, they ran from Abishai and retreated into the city. After the battle was over, Joab returned to Jerusalem.
15
The Arameans now realized that they were no match for Israel. So when they regrouped,
16
they were joined by additional Aramean troops summoned by Hadadezer from the other side of the Euphrates River. These troops arrived at Helam under the command of Shobach, the commander of Hadadezer’s forces.
English Standard Version

The rest of his men he put in the charge of Abishai his brother, and he arrayed them against the Ammonites.

And he said, "If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me, but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come and help you.
12
Be of good courage, and let us be courageous for our people, and for the cities of our God, and may the
Lord
do what seems good to him."

And Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the Euphrates. They came to Helam, with Shobach the commander of the army of Hadadezer at their head.
