Romans 9:18-20
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 9
18
So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires.
19
You will say to me then, 'Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?'
20
On the contrary, who are you, you
foolish
person, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, 'Why did you make me like this,' will it?
King James Version
Chapter 9
18
Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.
19
Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
20
Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 9
18
So then, he has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy and he hardens whom he wants to harden.
19
You will say to me, therefore, "Why then does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?"
20
But who are you, a mere man, to talk back to God? Will what is formed say to the one who formed it, "Why did you make me like this?"
New Living Translation
Chapter 9
18
So you see, God chooses to show mercy to some, and he chooses to harden the hearts of others so they refuse to listen.
19
Well then, you might say, 'Why does God blame people for not responding? Haven’t they simply done what he makes them do?'
20
No, don’t say that. Who are you, a mere human being, to argue with God? Should the thing that was created say to the one who created it, 'Why have you made me like this?'
English Standard Version
Chapter 9
18
So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.
19
You will say to me then, "Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?"
20
But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, "Why have you made me like this?"
New International Version
Chapter 9
18
Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.
19
One of you will say to me: "Then why does God still blame us? For who is able to resist his will?"
20
But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? "Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’ "
New King James Version
Chapter 9
18
Therefore He has mercy on whom He wills, and whom He wills He hardens.
19
You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?”
20
But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed
it
, “Why have you made me like this?”
