Chapter 5

29And Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them. 30The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling to His disciples, saying, 'Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?' 31And Jesus answered and said to them, 'It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. 32I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners.'
33And they said to Him, 'The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples of the Pharisees also do the same, but Yours eat and drink.' 34And Jesus said to them, 'You cannot make the attendants of the groom fast while the groom is with them, can you? 35But the days will come; and when the groom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.'

29And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them. 30But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? 31And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. 32I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. 33And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink? 34And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? 35But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.

31Jesus replied to them, "It is not those who are healthy who need a doctor, but those who are sick. 32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
33Then they said to him, "John's disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but yours eat and drink."
34Jesus said to them, "You can't make the wedding guests fast while the groom is with them, can you? 35But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them--then they will fast in those days."

Chapter 5

29Later, Levi held a banquet in his home with Jesus as the guest of honor. Many of Levi’s fellow tax collectors and other guests also ate with them. 30But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus’ disciples, 'Why do you eat and drink with such scum? '
31Jesus answered them, 'Healthy people don’t need a doctor — sick people do. 32I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.'
33One day some people said to Jesus, 'John the Baptist’s disciples fast and pray regularly, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. Why are your disciples always eating and drinking?'
34Jesus responded, 'Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. 35But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.'
