Luke 5:33-39
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 5
33
And they said to Him, 'The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the
disciples
of the Pharisees also do the same, but Yours eat and drink.'
34
And Jesus said to them, 'You cannot make the attendants of the groom fast while the groom is with them, can you?
35
But
the
days will come; and when the groom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.'
36
And He was also telling them a parable: 'No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the patch from the new
garment
will not match the old.
37
And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined.
38
But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.
39
And no one, after drinking old
wine
wants new; for he says, ‘The old is fine.’?'
King James Version
Chapter 5
33
And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?
34
And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them
35
But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
36
And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
37
And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.
38
But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.
39
No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 5
33
Then they said to him, "John’s disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but yours eat and drink."
34
Jesus said to them, "You can’t make the wedding guests fast while the groom is with them, can you?
35
But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them—then they will fast in those days."
36
He also told them a parable: "No one tears a patch from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. Otherwise, not only will he tear the new, but also the piece from the new garment will not match the old.
37
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, it will spill, and the skins will be ruined.
38
No, new wine is put into fresh wineskins.
39
And no one, after drinking old wine, wants new, because he says, ‘The old is better.’"
New Living Translation
Chapter 5
33
One day some people said to Jesus, 'John the Baptist’s disciples fast and pray regularly, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. Why are your disciples always eating and drinking?'
34
Jesus responded, 'Do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not.
35
But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.'
36
Then Jesus gave them this illustration: 'No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to patch an old garment. For then the new garment would be ruined, and the new patch wouldn’t even match the old garment.
37
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. For the new wine would burst the wineskins, spilling the wine and ruining the skins.
38
New wine must be stored in new wineskins.
39
But no one who drinks the old wine seems to want the new wine. ‘The old is just fine,’ they say.'
English Standard Version

37
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed.
38
But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.
39
And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’"
New International Version
Chapter 5
33
They said to him, "John’s disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking."
34
Jesus answered, "Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them?
35
But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast."
36
He told them this parable: "No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old.
37
And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.
38
No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.
39
And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’ "

And no one, having drunk old
wine,
immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’ ”
