Chapter 5
17One day He was teaching, and there were some Pharisees and teachers of the Law sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing. 18And some men were carrying a man on a stretcher who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down in front of Him. 19But when they did not find any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. 20And seeing their faith, He said, 'Friend, your sins are forgiven you.' 21The scribes and the Pharisees began thinking of the implications, saying, 'Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, except God alone?' 22But Jesus, aware of their thoughts, responded and said to them, 'Why are you thinking this way in your hearts? 23Which is easier, to say: ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,' He said to the man who was paralyzed, 'I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher, and go home.' 25And immediately he got up before them, and picked up what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God. 26And they were all struck with astonishment and began glorifying God. They were also filled with fear, saying, 'We have seen remarkable things today!'
27After that He went out and looked at a tax collector named Levi sitting in the tax office, and He said to him, 'Follow Me.'
28And he left everything behind, and got up and began following Him.
29And Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them.
30The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling to His disciples, saying, 'Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?'
31And Jesus answered and said to them, 'It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick.
32I have not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners.'
33And they said to Him, 'The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples of the Pharisees also do the same, but Yours eat and drink.'
34And Jesus said to them, 'You cannot make the attendants of the groom fast while the groom is with them, can you?
35But the days will come; and when the groom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.'
36And He was also telling them a parable: 'No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the patch from the new garment will not match the old.
37And no one pours new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined.
38But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.

17And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. 18And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. 19And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. 20And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. 21And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? 22But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts 23Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? 24But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. 25And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. 26And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.
27And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.
28And he left all, rose up, and followed him.
29And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.
30But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
31And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.
32I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
33And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?
34And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them
35But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
36And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
37And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.
38But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.

And the Lord’s power to heal was in him. 18Just then some men came, carrying on a stretcher a man who was paralyzed. They tried to bring him in and set him down before him. 19Since they could not find a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on the stretcher through the roof tiles into the middle of the crowd before Jesus.
22But perceiving their thoughts, Jesus replied to them, "Why are you thinking this in your hearts?
23Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?
24But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" —he told the paralyzed man, "I tell you: Get up, take your stretcher, and go home."
25Immediately he got up before them, picked up what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God.
26Then everyone was astounded, and they were giving glory to God. And they were filled with awe and said, "We have seen incredible things today."
27After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, "Follow me."
28So, leaving everything behind, he got up and began to follow him.
29Then Levi hosted a grand banquet for him at his house. Now there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others who were guests with them.
30But the Pharisees and their scribes were complaining to his disciples, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?"
31Jesus replied to them, "It is not those who are healthy who need a doctor, but those who are sick.
32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
34Jesus said to them, "You can’t make the wedding guests fast while the groom is with them, can you?
35But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them—then they will fast in those days."
36He also told them a parable: "No one tears a patch from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. Otherwise, not only will he tear the new, but also the piece from the new garment will not match the old.
37And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, it will spill, and the skins will be ruined.
38No, new wine is put into fresh wineskins.

18Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a sleeping mat. They tried to take him inside to Jesus,
19but they couldn’t reach him because of the crowd. So they went up to the roof and took off some tiles. Then they lowered the sick man on his mat down into the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the man, 'Young man, your sins are forgiven.'
22Jesus knew what they were thinking, so he asked them, 'Why do you question this in your hearts?
23Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up and walk’?
24So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.' Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, 'Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!'
25And immediately, as everyone watched, the man jumped up, picked up his mat, and went home praising God.
26Everyone was gripped with great wonder and awe, and they praised God, exclaiming, 'We have seen amazing things today!'
27Later, as Jesus left the town, he saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at his tax collector’s booth. 'Follow me and be my disciple,' Jesus said to him.
28So Levi got up, left everything, and followed him.
29Later, Levi held a banquet in his home with Jesus as the guest of honor. Many of Levi’s fellow tax collectors and other guests also ate with them.
30But the Pharisees and their teachers of religious law complained bitterly to Jesus’ disciples, 'Why do you eat and drink with such scum? '
31Jesus answered them, 'Healthy people don’t need a doctor — sick people do.
32I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.'
