Chapter 6

27Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.' 28Therefore they said to Him, 'What are we to do, so that we may accomplish the works of God?' 29Jesus answered and said to them, 'This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.' 30So they said to Him, 'What then are You doing as a sign, so that we may see, and believe You? What work are You performing? 31Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘HE GAVE THEM BREAD OUT OF HEAVEN TO EAT.’?'

27Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. 28Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. 30They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work? 31Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

28"What can we do to perform the works of God?" they asked.

30"What sign, then, are you going to do so we may see and believe you?" they asked. "What are you going to perform? 31Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat."

27But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.'
28They replied, 'We want to perform God’s works, too. What should we do?'
29Jesus told them, 'This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.'
30They answered, 'Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do? 31After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed through the wilderness! The Scriptures say, ‘Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ '
