John 1:22-31
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 1
22Then they said to him, 'Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?' 23He said, 'I am THE VOICE OF ONE CALLING OUT IN THE WILDERNESS, ‘MAKE THE WAY OF THE Lord STRAIGHT,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.'
24And the messengers had been sent from the Pharisees.
25They asked him, and said to him, 'Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?'
26John answered them, saying, 'I baptize in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.
27It is He who comes after me, of whom I am not worthy even to untie the strap of His sandal.'
28These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing people.
29The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him, and *said, 'Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
30This is He in behalf of whom I said, ‘After me is coming a Man who has proved to be my superior, because He existed before me.’
31And I did not recognize Him, but so that He would be revealed to Israel, I came baptizing in water.'
King James Version
Chapter 1
22Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? 23He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. 24And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. 25And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? 26John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; 27He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.
29The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
30This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.
31And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.
25So they asked him, "Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?"
26"I baptize with water," John answered them. "Someone stands among you, but you don’t know him.
27He is the one coming after me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie."
28All this happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30This is the one I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’
31I didn’t know him, but I came baptizing with water so he might be revealed to Israel."
New Living Translation
24Then the Pharisees who had been sent
25asked him, 'If you aren’t the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet, what right do you have to baptize?'
26John told them, 'I baptize with water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize.
27Though his ministry follows mine, I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandal.'
29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, 'Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
30He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’
31I did not recognize him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.'
English Standard Version
Chapter 1
22So they said to him, "Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" 23He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said."
24(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.)
25They asked him, "Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
26John answered them, "I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know,
27even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie."
28These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’
31I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel."
New International Version
24Now the Pharisees who had been sent
25questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
26"I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know.
27He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."
29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
30This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’
31I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel."
New King James Version
24Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees.
25And they asked him, saying, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
26John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know.
27It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.”
29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
30This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’
31I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”
