Isaiah 45:3-11
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 45
3
I will give you the treasures of darkness
And hidden wealth of secret places,
So that you may know that it is I,
The
Lord
, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.
4
For the sake of Jacob My servant,
And Israel My chosen
one,
I have also called you by your name;
I have given you a title of honor
Though you have not known Me.
5
I am the
Lord
, and there is no one else;
There is no God except Me.
I will arm you, though you have not known Me,
6
So that
people
may know from the rising to the setting of the sun
That there is no one besides Me.
I am the
Lord
, and there is no one else,
7
The One forming light and creating darkness,
Causing well-being and creating disaster;
I am the
Lord
who does all these things.
8
'Drip down, heavens, from above,
And let the clouds pour down righteousness;
Let the earth open up and salvation bear fruit,
And righteousness sprout with it.
I, the
Lord
, have created it.
9
'Woe to
the one
who quarrels with his Maker—
A piece of pottery among the
other
earthenware pottery pieces!
Will the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you doing?’
Or the thing you are making
say,
‘He has no hands’?
10
Woe to him who says to a father, ‘What are you fathering?’
Or to a woman, ‘To what are you giving birth?’?'
11
This is what the
Lord
says, the Holy One of Israel and his Maker:
'Ask Me about the things to come concerning My sons,
And you shall commit to Me the work of My hands.
King James Version
Chapter 45
3
And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the
Lord
, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.
4
For Jacob my servant's sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me.
5
I am the
Lord
, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:
6
That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the
Lord
, and there is none else.
7
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the
Lord
do all these things.
8
Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I the
Lord
have created it.
9
Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?
10
Woe unto him that saith unto his father, What begettest thou? or to the woman, What hast thou brought forth?
11
Thus saith the
Lord
, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 45
3
I will give you the treasures of darkness
and riches from secret places,
so that you may know that I am the
Lord
.
I am the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.
4
I call you by your name,
for the sake of my servant Jacob
and Israel my chosen one.
I give a name to you,
though you do not know me.
5
I am the
Lord
, and there is no other;
there is no God but me.
I will strengthen you,
though you do not know me,
6
so that all may know from the rising of the sun to its setting
that there is no one but me.
I am the
Lord
, and there is no other.
7
I form light and create darkness,
I make success and create disaster;
I am the
Lord
, who does all these things.
8
"Heavens, sprinkle from above,
and let the skies shower righteousness.
Let the earth open up
so that salvation will sprout
and righteousness will spring up with it.
I, the
Lord
, have created it.
9
"Woe to the one who argues with his Maker—
one clay pot among many.
Does clay say to the one forming it,
‘What are you making?’
Or does your work say,
‘He has no hands’?
10
Woe to the one who says to his father,
‘What are you fathering?’
or to his mother,
‘What are you giving birth to?’"
11
This is what the
Lord
,
the Holy One of Israel and its Maker, says:
"Ask me what is to happen to my sons,
and instruct me about the work of my hands.
New Living Translation
Chapter 45
3
And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness —
secret riches.
I will do this so you may know that I am the
Lord
,
the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name.
4
'And why have I called you for this work?
Why did I call you by name when you did not know me?
It is for the sake of Jacob my servant,
Israel my chosen one.
5
I am the
Lord
;
there is no other God.
I have equipped you for battle,
though you don’t even know me,
6
so all the world from east to west
will know there is no other God.
I am the
Lord
, and there is no other.
7
I create the light and make the darkness.
I send good times and bad times.
I, the
Lord
, am the one who does these things.
8
'Open up, O heavens,
and pour out your righteousness.
Let the earth open wide
so salvation and righteousness can sprout up together.
I, the
Lord
, created them.
9
'What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator.
Does a clay pot argue with its maker?
Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying,
‘Stop, you’re doing it wrong!’
Does the pot exclaim,
‘How clumsy can you be?’
10
How terrible it would be if a newborn baby said to its father,
‘Why was I born?’
or if it said to its mother,
‘Why did you make me this way?’'
11
This is what the
Lord
says —
the Holy One of Israel and your Creator:
'Do you question what I do for my children?
Do you give me orders about the work of my hands?

Does the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’
