Proverbs 1-3

New American Standard Bible
2To know wisdom and instruction, To discern the sayings of understanding, 3To receive instruction in wise behavior, Righteousness, justice, and integrity; 4To give prudence to the naive, To the youth knowledge and discretion, 5A wise person will hear and increase in learning, And a person of understanding will acquire wise counsel, 6To understand a proverb and a saying, The words of the wise and their riddles. 7The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction. 8Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, And do not ignore your mother’s teaching; 9For they are a graceful wreath for your head And necklaces for your neck. 10My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent. 11If they say, 'Come with us, Let’s lie in wait for blood, Let’s ambush the innocent without cause; 12Let’s swallow them alive like Sheol, Even whole, like those who go down to the pit; 13We will find all kinds of precious wealth, We will fill our houses with plunder; 14Throw in your lot with us; We will all have one money bag,' 15My son, do not walk on the way with them. Keep your feet from their path, 16For their feet run to evil, And they are quick to shed blood. 17Indeed, it is useless to spread the baited net In the sight of any bird; 18But they lie in wait for their own blood; They ambush their own lives. 19Such are the ways of everyone who makes unjust gain; It takes away the life of its possessors. 20Wisdom shouts in the street, She raises her voice in the public square; 21At the head of the noisy streets she cries out; At the entrance of the gates in the city she declares her sayings: 22'How long, you naive ones, will you love simplistic thinking? And how long will scoffers delight themselves in scoffing And fools hate knowledge? 23Turn to my rebuke, Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you. 24Because I called and you refused, I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention; 25And you neglected all my advice And did not want my rebuke; 26I will also laugh at your disaster; I will mock when your dread comes, 27When your dread comes like a storm And your disaster comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you. 28Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently but will not find me, 29Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the Lord. 30They did not accept my advice, They disdainfully rejected every rebuke from me. 31So they shall eat of the fruit of their own way, And be filled with their own schemes. 32For the faithlessness of the naive will kill them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them. 33But whoever listens to me will live securely And will be at ease from the dread of evil.'

Chapter 2

1My son, if you will receive my words And treasure my commandments within you, 2Make your ear attentive to wisdom; Incline your heart to understanding. 3For if you cry out for insight, And raise your voice for understanding; 4If you seek her as silver And search for her as for hidden treasures; 5Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, And discover the knowledge of God. 6For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding. 7He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8Guarding the paths of justice, And He watches over the way of His godly ones. 9Then you will discern righteousness, justice, And integrity, and every good path. 10For wisdom will enter your heart, And knowledge will be delightful to your soul; 11Discretion will watch over you, Understanding will guard you, 12To rescue you from the way of evil, From a person who speaks perverse things; 13 From those who leave the paths of uprightness To walk in the ways of darkness; 14Who delight in doing evil And rejoice in the perversity of evil; 15Whose paths are crooked, And who are devious in their ways; 16To rescue you from the strange woman, From the foreign woman who flatters with her words, 17Who leaves the companion of her youth And forgets the covenant of her God; 18For her house sinks down to death, And her tracks lead to the dead; 19None who go to her return, Nor do they reach the paths of life. 20So you will walk in the way of good people And keep to the paths of the righteous. 21For the upright will live in the land, And the blameless will remain in it; 22But the wicked will be eliminated from the land, And the treacherous will be torn away from it.

Chapter 3

1My son, do not forget my teaching, But have your heart comply with my commandments; 2For length of days and years of life And peace they will add to you. 3Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart. 4So you will find favor and a good reputation In the sight of God and man. 5Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. 7Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and turn away from evil. 8It will be healing to your body And refreshment to your bones. 9Honor the Lord from your wealth, And from the first of all your produce; 10Then your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine. 11My son, do not reject the discipline of the Lord Or loathe His rebuke, 12For whom the Lord loves He disciplines, Just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights. 13Blessed is a person who finds wisdom, And one who obtains understanding. 14For her profit is better than the profit of silver, And her produce better than gold. 15She is more precious than jewels, And nothing you desire compares with her. 16 Long life is in her right hand; In her left hand are riches and honor. 17Her ways are pleasant ways, And all her paths are peace. 18She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, And happy are those who hold on to her. 19The Lord founded the earth by wisdom, He established the heavens by understanding. 20By His knowledge the ocean depths were burst open, And the clouds drip with dew. 21My son, see that they do not escape from your sight; Comply with sound wisdom and discretion, 22And they will be life to your soul And adornment to your neck. 23Then you will walk in your way securely, And your foot will not stumble. 24When you lie down, you will not be afraid; When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. 25Do not be afraid of sudden danger, Nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes; 26For the Lord will be your confidence, And will keep your foot from being caught. 27Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, When it is in your power to do it. 28Do not say to your neighbor, 'Go, and come back, And tomorrow I will give it to you,' When you have it with you. 29Do not devise harm against your neighbor, While he lives securely beside you. 30Do not contend with a person for no reason, If he has done you no harm. 31Do not envy a violent person, And do not choose any of his ways. 32For the devious are an abomination to the Lord; But He is intimate with the upright. 33The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked, But He blesses the home of the righteous. 34Though He scoffs at the scoffers, Yet He gives grace to the needy. 35The wise will inherit honor, But fools increase dishonor.

6for understanding a proverb or a parable, the words of the wise, and their riddles. 7The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline. 8Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and don’t reject your mother’s teaching, 9for they will be a garland of favor on your head and pendants around your neck. 10My son, if sinners entice you, don’t be persuaded. 11If they say—"Come with us! Let’s set an ambush and kill someone. Let’s attack some innocent person just for fun! 12Let’s swallow them alive, like Sheol, whole, like those who go down to the Pit. 13We’ll find all kinds of valuable property and fill our houses with plunder. 14Throw in your lot with us, and we’ll all share the loot" — 15my son, don’t travel that road with them or set foot on their path, 16because their feet run toward evil and they hurry to shed blood. 17It is useless to spread a net where any bird can see it, 18but they set an ambush to kill themselves; they attack their own lives. 19Such are the paths of all who make profit dishonestly; it takes the lives of those who receive it. 20Wisdom calls out in the street; she makes her voice heard in the public squares. 21She cries out above the commotion; she speaks at the entrance of the city gates: 22"How long, inexperienced ones, will you love ignorance? How long will you mockers enjoy mocking and you fools hate knowledge? 23If you respond to my warning, then I will pour out my spirit on you and teach you my words. 24Since I called out and you refused, extended my hand and no one paid attention, 25since you neglected all my counsel and did not accept my correction, 26I, in turn, will laugh at your calamity. I will mock when terror strikes you, 27when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when trouble and stress overcome you. 28Then they will call me, but I won’t answer; they will search for me, but won’t find me. 29Because they hated knowledge, didn’t choose to fear the Lord, 30were not interested in my counsel, and rejected all my correction, 31they will eat the fruit of their way and be glutted with their own schemes. 32For the apostasy of the inexperienced will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them. 33But whoever listens to me will live securely and be undisturbed by the dread of danger."

Chapter 2

1My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2listening closely to wisdom and directing your heart to understanding; 3furthermore, if you call out to insight and lift your voice to understanding, 4if you seek it like silver and search for it like hidden treasure, 5then you will understand the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God. 6For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. 7He stores up success for the upright; He is a shield for those who live with integrity 8so that he may guard the paths of justice and protect the way of his faithful followers. 9Then you will understand righteousness, justice, and integrity—every good path. 10For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will delight you. 11Discretion will watch over you, and understanding will guard you. 12It will rescue you from the way of evil— from anyone who says perverse things, 13from those who abandon the right paths to walk in ways of darkness, 14from those who enjoy doing evil and celebrate perversion, 15whose paths are crooked, and whose ways are devious. 16It will rescue you from a forbidden woman, from a wayward woman with her flattering talk, 17who abandons the companion of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God; 18for her house sinks down to death and her ways to the land of the departed spirits. 19None return who go to her; none reach the paths of life. 20So follow the way of the good, and keep to the paths of the righteous. 21For the upright will inhabit the land, and those of integrity will remain in it; 22but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the treacherous ripped out of it.

How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? 23If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you. 24 Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded, 25because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, 26I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when terror strikes you, 27when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. 28 Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me. 29Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord, 30 would have none of my counsel and despised all my reproof, 31therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way, and have their fill of their own devices. 32For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them; 33but whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster."

Chapter 2

1 My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, 2making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; 3yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, 4if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, 5then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. 6For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; 7he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. 9 Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; 10for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; 11 discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you, 12delivering you from the way of evil, from men of perverted speech, 13who forsake the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness, 14who rejoice in doing evil and delight in the perverseness of evil, 15men whose paths are crooked, and who are devious in their ways. 16So you will be delivered from the forbidden woman, from the adulteress with her smooth words, 17who forsakes the companion of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God; 18 for her house sinks down to death, and her paths to the departed; 19none who go to her come back, nor do they regain the paths of life. 20So you will walk in the way of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous. 21For the upright will inhabit the land, and those with integrity will remain in it, 22but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the treacherous will be rooted out of it.

Chapter 3

1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, 2for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. 3Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. 4So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. 7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. 8It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones. 9Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; 10then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. 11 My son, do not despise the Lord 's discipline or be weary of his reproof, 12for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights. 13 Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, 14 for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. 15She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. 16 Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. 17Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. 18She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called blessed. 19 The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding he established the heavens; 20by his knowledge the deeps broke open, and the clouds drop down the dew. 21My son, do not lose sight of these — keep sound wisdom and discretion, 22and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck. 23 Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble. 24 If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. 25 Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes, 26for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught. 27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. 28 Do not say to your neighbor, "Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give it" — when you have it with you. 29 Do not plan evil against your neighbor, who dwells trustingly beside you. 30 Do not contend with a man for no reason, when he has done you no harm. 31 Do not envy a man of violence and do not choose any of his ways, 32for the devious person is an abomination to the Lord, but the upright are in his confidence. 33 The Lord 's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the dwelling of the righteous. 34Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor. 35The wise will inherit honor, but fools get disgrace.

Chapter 1

1The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: 2To know wisdom and instruction, To perceive the words of understanding, 3To receive the instruction of wisdom, Justice, judgment, and equity; 4To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion— 5 A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel, 6To understand a proverb and an enigma, The words of the wise and their riddles. 7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction. 8 My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother; 9For they will be a graceful ornament on your head, And chains about your neck. 10My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent. 11If they say, “Come with us, Let us lie in wait to shed blood; Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause; 12Let us swallow them alive like Sheol, And whole, like those who go down to the Pit; 13We shall find all kinds of precious possessions, We shall fill our houses with spoil; 14Cast in your lot among us, Let us all have one purse”— 15My son, do not walk in the way with them, Keep your foot from their path; 16 For their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed blood. 17Surely, in vain the net is spread In the sight of any bird; 18But they lie in wait for their own blood, They lurk secretly for their own lives. 19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain; It takes away the life of its owners. 20 Wisdom calls aloud outside; She raises her voice in the open squares. 21She cries out in the chief concourses, At the openings of the gates in the city She speaks her words: 22“How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? For scorners delight in their scorning, And fools hate knowledge. 23Turn at my rebuke; Surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you. 24 Because I have called and you refused, I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded, 25Because you disdained all my counsel, And would have none of my rebuke, 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your terror comes, 27When your terror comes like a storm, And your destruction comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you. 28“Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me. 29Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the Lord, 30 They would have none of my counsel And despised my every rebuke. 31Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, And be filled to the full with their own fancies. 32For the turning away of the simple will slay them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them; 33But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, And will be secure, without fear of evil.”

Chapter 2

1My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you, 2So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding; 3Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, 4 If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; 5 Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, And find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding; 7He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; 8He guards the paths of justice, And preserves the way of His saints. 9Then you will understand righteousness and justice, Equity and every good path. 10When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your soul, 11Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you, 12To deliver you from the way of evil, From the man who speaks perverse things, 13From those who leave the paths of uprightness To walk in the ways of darkness; 14 Who rejoice in doing evil, And delight in the perversity of the wicked; 15 Whose ways are crooked, And who are devious in their paths; 16To deliver you from the immoral woman, From the seductress who flatters with her words, 17Who forsakes the companion of her youth, And forgets the covenant of her God. 18For her house leads down to death, And her paths to the dead; 19None who go to her return, Nor do they regain the paths of life— 20So you may walk in the way of goodness, And keep to the paths of righteousness. 21For the upright will dwell in the land, And the blameless will remain in it; 22But the wicked will be cut off from the earth, And the unfaithful will be uprooted from it.

Chapter 3

1My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands; 2For length of days and long life And peace they will add to you. 3Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, 4 And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man. 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. 7Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and depart from evil. 8It will be health to your flesh, And strength to your bones. 9 Honor the Lord with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase; 10 So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine. 11 My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor detest His correction; 12For whom the Lord loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights. 13 Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding; 14 For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, And her gain than fine gold. 15She is more precious than rubies, And all the things you may desire cannot compare with her. 16 Length of days is in her right hand, In her left hand riches and honor. 17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, And all her paths are peace. 18She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, And happy are all who retain her. 19 The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; By understanding He established the heavens; 20By His knowledge the depths were broken up, And clouds drop down the dew. 21My son, let them not depart from your eyes— Keep sound wisdom and discretion; 22So they will be life to your soul And grace to your neck. 23 Then you will walk safely in your way, And your foot will not stumble. 24When you lie down, you will not be afraid; Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet. 25 Do not be afraid of sudden terror, Nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes; 26For the Lord will be your confidence, And will keep your foot from being caught. 27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, When it is in the power of your hand to do so. 28 Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come back, And tomorrow I will give it,When you have it with you. 29Do not devise evil against your neighbor, For he dwells by you for safety’s sake. 30 Do not strive with a man without cause, If he has done you no harm. 31 Do not envy the oppressor, And choose none of his ways; 32For the perverse person is an abomination to the Lord, But His secret counsel is with the upright. 33 The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked, But He blesses the home of the just. 34 Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble. 35The wise shall inherit glory, But shame shall be the legacy of fools.
