Mark 14:4-9
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 14
4
But there were some indignantly
remarking
to one another, 'Why has this perfume been wasted?
5
For this perfume could have been sold for over three hundred denarii, and
the money
given to the poor.' And they were scolding her.
6
But Jesus said, 'Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a good deed for Me.
7
For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me.
8
She has done what she could; she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial.
9
Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the entire world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.'
King James Version
Chapter 14
4
And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?
5
For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.
6
And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her she hath wrought a good work on me.
7
For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.
8
She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.
9
Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 14
4
But some were expressing indignation to one another: "Why has this perfume been wasted?
5
For this perfume might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor." And they began to scold her.
6
Jesus replied, "Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a noble thing for me.
7
You always have the poor with you, and you can do what is good for them whenever you want, but you do not always have me.
8
She has done what she could; she has anointed my body in advance for burial.
9
Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her."
New Living Translation
Chapter 14
4
Some of those at the table were indignant. 'Why waste such expensive perfume?' they asked.
5
It could have been sold for a year’s wages and the money given to the poor!' So they scolded her harshly.
6
But Jesus replied, 'Leave her alone. Why criticize her for doing such a good thing to me?
7
You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me.
8
She has done what she could and has anointed my body for burial ahead of time.
9
I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.'
English Standard Version
Chapter 14
4
There were some who said to themselves indignantly, "Why was the ointment wasted like that?
5
For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor." And they scolded her.
6
But Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
7
For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me.
8
She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial.
9
And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her."
New International Version
Chapter 14
4
Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, "Why this waste of perfume?
5
It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor." And they rebuked her harshly.
6
"Leave her alone," said Jesus. "Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
7
The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me.
8
She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.
9
Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."
New King James Version
Chapter 14
4
But there were some who were indignant among themselves, and said, “Why was this fragrant oil wasted?
5
For it might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they criticized her sharply.
6
But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me.
7
For you have the poor with you always, and whenever you wish you may do them good; but Me you do not have always.
8
She has done what she could. She has come beforehand to anoint My body for burial.
9
Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”
