Luke 4:20-25
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 4
20
And He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all
the people
in the synagogue were intently directed at Him.
21
Now He began to say to them, 'Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.'
22
And all
the people
were speaking well of Him, and admiring the gracious words which were coming from His lips; and
yet
they were saying, 'Is this not Joseph’s son?'
23
And He said to them, 'No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! All
the miracles that
we heard were done in Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’?'
24
But He said, 'Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown.
25
But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a severe famine came over all the land;
King James Version
Chapter 4
20
And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
21
And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
22
And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?
23
And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.
24
And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.
25
But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;

Chapter 4
20
He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.
21
He began by saying to them, "Today as you listen, this Scripture has been fulfilled."
22
They were all speaking well of him and were amazed by the gracious words that came from his mouth; yet they said, "Isn’t this Joseph’s son?"
23
Then he said to them, "No doubt you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Doctor, heal yourself. What we’ve heard that took place in Capernaum, do here in your hometown also.’"
24
He also said, "Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.
25
But I say to you, there were certainly many widows in Israel in Elijah’s days, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months while a great famine came over all the land.
New Living Translation
Chapter 4
20
He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently.
21
Then he began to speak to them. 'The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!'
22
Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips. 'How can this be?' they asked. 'Isn’t this Joseph’s son?'
23
Then he said, 'You will undoubtedly quote me this proverb: ‘Physician, heal yourself’ — meaning, ‘Do miracles here in your hometown like those you did in Capernaum.’
24
But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.
25
Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land.
