John 5:7-19
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 5
7The sick man answered Him, 'Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.' 8Jesus *said to him, 'Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.'
9Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk. Now it was a Sabbath on that day.
10So the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, 'It is a Sabbath, and it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.'
11But he answered them, 'He who made me well was the one who said to me, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk.’'
12They asked him, 'Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick it up and walk’?'
13But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place.
14Afterward, Jesus *found him in the temple and said to him, 'Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.'
15The man went away, and informed the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
16For this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on a Sabbath.
17But He answered them, 'My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.'
King James Version
Chapter 5
7The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. 8Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. 9And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. 10The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. 11He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. 12Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? 13And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place. 14Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee. 15The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole. 16And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
17But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
18Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
19Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
Christian Standard Bible
9Instantly the man got well, picked up his mat, and started to walk. Now that day was the Sabbath,
10and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "This is the Sabbath. The law prohibits you from picking up your mat."
12"Who is this man who told you, 'Pick up your mat and walk'? " they asked.
13But the man who was healed did not know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.
14After this, Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "See, you are well. Do not sin anymore, so that something worse doesn't happen to you."
15The man went and reported to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
16Therefore, the Jews began persecuting Jesus because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
New Living Translation
9Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking! But this miracle happened on the Sabbath,
10so the Jewish leaders objected. They said to the man who was cured, 'You can’t work on the Sabbath! The law doesn’t allow you to carry that sleeping mat!'
13The man didn’t know, for Jesus had disappeared into the crowd.
14But afterward Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, 'Now you are well; so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you.'
15Then the man went and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had healed him.
16So the Jewish leaders began harassing Jesus for breaking the Sabbath rules.
17But Jesus replied, 'My Father is always working, and so am I.'
18So the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill him. For he not only broke the Sabbath, he called God his Father, thereby making himself equal with God.

Chapter 5
7The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” 8Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” 9And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath.
10So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.”
11But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’”
12They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?”
13Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place.
14Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you.”
15The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.
16And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
17But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”
New International Version
9At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,
10and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, 'It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.'
14Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, 'See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.'
15The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.
16So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him.
17In his defense Jesus said to them, 'My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.'
18For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
New King James Version
9And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath.
10The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”
12Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?”
13But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place.
14Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”
16For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath.
17But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”
18Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.
19Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.
