John 5:5-10
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 5
5
Now a man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.
6
Jesus, upon seeing this man lying
there
and knowing that he had already been
in that condition
for a long time, *said to him, 'Do you want to get well?'
7
The sick man answered Him, 'Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.'
8
Jesus *said to him, 'Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.'
9
Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and
began
to walk. Now it was a Sabbath on that day.
10
So the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, 'It is a Sabbath, and it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.'
King James Version
Chapter 5
5
And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
6
When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole
7
The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
8
Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.
9
And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
10
The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 5
5
One man was there who had been disabled for thirty-eight years.
6
When Jesus saw him lying there and realized he had already been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to get well?"
7
"Sir," the disabled man answered, "I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I’m coming, someone goes down ahead of me."
8
"Get up," Jesus told him, "pick up your mat and walk."
9
Instantly the man got well, picked up his mat, and started to walk. Now that day was the Sabbath,
10
and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "This is the Sabbath. The law prohibits you from picking up your mat."
New Living Translation
Chapter 5
5
One of the men lying there had been sick for thirty-eight years.
6
When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, 'Would you like to get well?'
7
I can’t, sir,' the sick man said, 'for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me.'
8
Jesus told him, 'Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!'
9
Instantly, the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking! But this miracle happened on the Sabbath,
10
so the Jewish leaders objected. They said to the man who was cured, 'You can’t work on the Sabbath! The law doesn’t allow you to carry that sleeping mat!'
English Standard Version
Chapter 5
5
One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
6
When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?"
7
The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me."
8
Jesus said to him, "Get up, take up your bed, and walk."
9
And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath.
10
So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed."
New International Version
Chapter 5
5
One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
6
When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?"
7
"Sir," the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me."
8
Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk."
9
At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,
10
and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat."
