Chapter 12

6Now he said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he kept the money box, he used to steal from what was put into it. 7Therefore Jesus said, 'Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial. 8For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.'
9The large crowd of the Jews then learned that He was there; and they came, not on account of Jesus only, but so that they might also see Lazarus, whom He raised from the dead.

Chapter 12

6This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. 7Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. 8For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.
9Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

6He didn’t say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the money-bag and would steal part of what was put in it.

6Not that he cared for the poor — he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself.
7Jesus replied, 'Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial. 8You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.'
9When all the people heard of Jesus’ arrival, they flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead.
