John 11:7-13
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 11
7
Then after this He *said to the disciples, 'Let’s go to Judea again.'
8
The disciples *said to Him, 'Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone You, and
yet
You are going there again?'
9
Jesus replied, 'Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10
But if anyone walks during the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.'
11
This He said, and after this He *said to them, 'Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going so that I may awaken him from sleep.'
12
The disciples then said to Him, 'Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will come out of it.'
13
Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about actual sleep.
King James Version
Chapter 11
7
Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
8
His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?
9
Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
10
But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
11
These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
12
Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13
Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 11
7
Then after that, he said to the disciples, "Let’s go to Judea again."
8
"Rabbi," the disciples told him, "just now the Jews tried to stone you, and you’re going there again?"
9
"Aren’t there twelve hours in a day?" Jesus answered. "If anyone walks during the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10
But if anyone walks during the night, he does stumble, because the light is not in him."
11
He said this, and then he told them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I’m on my way to wake him up."
12
Then the disciples said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well."
13
Jesus, however, was speaking about his death, but they thought he was speaking about natural sleep.
New Living Translation
Chapter 11
7
Finally, he said to his disciples, 'Let’s go back to Judea.'
8
But his disciples objected. 'Rabbi,' they said, 'only a few days ago the people in Judea were trying to stone you. Are you going there again?'
9
Jesus replied, 'There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world.
10
But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.'
11
Then he said, 'Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.'
12
The disciples said, 'Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!'
13
They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died.
English Standard Version
Chapter 11
7
Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let us go to Judea again."
8
The disciples said to him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?"
9
Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10
But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."
11
After saying these things, he said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him."
12
The disciples said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."
13
Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep.
New International Version
Chapter 11
7
and then he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea."
8
"But Rabbi," they said, "a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone you, and yet you are going back?"
9
Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light.
10
It is when a person walks at night that they stumble, for they have no light."
11
After he had said this, he went on to tell them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up."
12
His disciples replied, "Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better."
13
Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.
New King James Version
Chapter 11
7
Then after this He said to
the
disciples, “Let us go to Judea again.”
8
The
disciples said to Him, “Rabbi, lately the Jews sought to stone You, and are You going there again?”
9
Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
10
But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
11
These things He said, and after that He said to them, “Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.”
12
Then His disciples said, “Lord, if he sleeps he will get well.”
13
However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep.
