John 11:28-39
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 11
28
When she had said this, she left and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, 'The Teacher is here and is calling for you.'
29
And when she heard
this,
she *got up quickly and came to Him.
30
Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha met Him.
31
Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw that Mary had gotten up quickly and left, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.
32
So when Mary came
to the place
where Jesus was, she saw Him and fell at His feet, saying to Him, 'Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.'
33
Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her
also
weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled,
34
and He said, 'Where have you laid him?' They *said to Him, 'Lord, come and see.'
35
Jesus wept.
36
So the Jews were saying, 'See how He loved him!'
37
But some of them said, 'Could this man, who opened the eyes of the man who was blind, not have also kept this man from dying?'
38
So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, *came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.
39
Jesus *said, 'Remove the stone.' Martha, the sister of the deceased, *said to Him, 'Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been
dead
four days.'
King James Version
Chapter 11
28
And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee.
29
As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
30
Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
31
The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.
32
Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
33
When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
34
And said, Where have ye laid him They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
35
Jesus wept.
36
Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
37
And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
38
Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
39
Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

Chapter 11
28
Having said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, saying in private, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you."
29
As soon as Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.
30
Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still in the place where Martha had met him.
31
The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw that Mary got up quickly and went out. They followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to cry there.
32
As soon as Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and told him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died!"
33
When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, he was deeply moved in his spirit and troubled.
34
"Where have you put him?" he asked. "Lord," they told him, "come and see."
35
Jesus wept.
36
So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!"
37
But some of them said, "Couldn’t he who opened the blind man’s eyes also have kept this man from dying?"
38
Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.
39
"Remove the stone," Jesus said. Martha, the dead man’s sister, told him, "Lord, there is already a stench because he has been dead four days."
New Living Translation
Chapter 11
28
Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, 'The Teacher is here and wants to see you.'
29
So Mary immediately went to him.
30
Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him.
31
When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there.
32
When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, 'Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.'
33
When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled.
34
Where have you put him?' he asked them. They told him, 'Lord, come and see.'
35
Then Jesus wept.
36
The people who were standing nearby said, 'See how much he loved him!'
37
But some said, 'This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?'
38
Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance.
39
Roll the stone aside,' Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, 'Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.'

"Take away the stone," he said. "But, Lord," said Martha, the sister of the dead man, "by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days."
