Isaiah 61:1-7
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 61
1
The Spirit of the Lord
God
is upon me,
Because the
Lord
anointed me
To bring good news to the humble;
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
To proclaim release to captives
And freedom to prisoners;
2
To proclaim the favorable year of the
Lord
And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn,
3
To grant those who mourn
in
Zion,
Giving them a garland instead of ashes,
The oil of gladness instead of mourning,
The cloak of praise instead of a disheartened spirit.
So they will be called oaks of righteousness,
The planting of the
Lord
, that He may be glorified.
4
Then they will rebuild the ancient ruins,
They will raise up the former devastations;
And they will repair the ruined cities,
The desolations of many generations.
5
Strangers will stand and pasture your flocks,
And foreigners will be your farmers and your vinedressers.
6
But you will be called the priests of the
Lord
;
You will be spoken of
as
ministers of our God.
You will eat the wealth of nations,
And you will boast in their riches.
7
Instead of your shame
you will have a
double
portion,
And
instead of
humiliation they will shout for joy over their portion.
Therefore they will possess a double
portion
in their land,
Everlasting joy will be theirs.
King James Version
Chapter 61
1
The Spirit of the Lord
God
is upon me; because the
Lord
hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
2
To proclaim the acceptable year of the
Lord
, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
3
To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the
Lord
, that he might be glorified.
4
And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.
5
And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.
6
But ye shall be named the Priests of the
Lord
: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.
7
For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.

Chapter 61
1
The Spirit of the Lord
God
is on me,
because the
Lord
has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives
and freedom to the prisoners;
2
to proclaim the year of the
Lord
’s favor,
and the day of our God’s vengeance;
to comfort all who mourn,
3
to provide for those who mourn in Zion;
to give them a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
festive oil instead of mourning,
and splendid clothes instead of despair.
And they will be called righteous trees,
planted by the
Lord
to glorify him.
4
They will rebuild the ancient ruins;
they will restore the former devastations;
they will renew the ruined cities,
the devastations of many generations.
5
Strangers will stand and feed your flocks,
and foreigners will be your plowmen and vinedressers.
6
But you will be called the
Lord
’s priests;
they will speak of you as ministers of our God;
you will eat the wealth of the nations,
and you will boast in their riches.
7
In place of your shame, you will have a double portion;
in place of disgrace, they will rejoice over their share.
So they will possess double in their land,
and eternal joy will be theirs.
New Living Translation
Chapter 61
1
The Spirit of the Sovereign
Lord
is upon me,
for the
Lord
has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted
and to proclaim that captives will be released
and prisoners will be freed.
2
He has sent me to tell those who mourn
that the time of the
Lord
’s favor has come,
and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies.
3
To all who mourn in Israel,
he will give a crown of beauty for ashes,
a joyous blessing instead of mourning,
festive praise instead of despair.
In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks
that the
Lord
has planted for his own glory.
4
They will rebuild the ancient ruins,
repairing cities destroyed long ago.
They will revive them,
though they have been deserted for many generations.
5
Foreigners will be your servants.
They will feed your flocks
and plow your fields
and tend your vineyards.
6
You will be called priests of the
Lord
,
ministers of our God.
You will feed on the treasures of the nations
and boast in their riches.
7
Instead of shame and dishonor,
you will enjoy a double share of honor.
You will possess a double portion of prosperity in your land,
and everlasting joy will be yours.
