Isaiah 51:13-19
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 51
13
That you have forgotten the
Lord
your Maker,
Who stretched out the heavens
And laid the foundations of the earth,
That you fear continually all day long because of the fury of the oppressor,
As he makes ready to destroy?
And where is the rage of the oppressor?
14
The exile will soon be set free, and will not die in the dungeon, nor will his bread be lacking.
15
For I am the
Lord
your God, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar (the
Lord
of armies is His name).
16
And I have put My words in your mouth and have covered you with the shadow of My hand, to establish the heavens, to found the earth, and to say to Zion, ‘You are My people.’?'
17
Pull yourself up! Pull yourself up! Arise, Jerusalem!
You who have drunk from the
Lord
’S hand the cup of His anger;
The chalice of staggering you have drunk to the dregs.
18
There is no one to guide her among all the sons
to whom
she has given birth,
Nor is there anyone to take her by the hand among all the sons she has raised.
19
These two things have happened to you;
Who will mourn for you?
The devastation and destruction, famine and sword;
How shall I comfort you?
King James Version
Chapter 51
13
And forgettest the
Lord
thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?
14
The captive exile hasteneth that he may be loosed, and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail.
15
But I am the
Lord
thy God, that divided the sea, whose waves roared: The
Lord
of hosts is his name.
16
And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people.
17
Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the
Lord
the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.
18
There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; neither is there any that taketh her by the hand of all the sons that she hath brought up.
19
These two things are come unto thee; who shall be sorry for thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee?
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 51
13
But you have forgotten the
Lord
, your Maker,
who stretched out the heavens
and laid the foundations of the earth.
You are in constant dread all day long
because of the fury of the oppressor,
who has set himself to destroy.
But where is the fury of the oppressor?
14
The prisoner is soon to be set free;
he will not die and go to the Pit,
and his food will not be lacking.
15
For I am the
Lord
your God
who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar —
his name is the
Lord
of Armies.
16
I have put my words in your mouth,
and covered you in the shadow of my hand,
in order to plant the heavens,
to found the earth,
and to say to Zion, "You are my people."
17
Wake yourself, wake yourself up!
Stand up, Jerusalem,
you who have drunk the cup of his fury
from the
Lord
’s hand;
you who have drunk the goblet to the dregs—
the cup that causes people to stagger.
18
There is no one to guide her
among all the children she has raised;
there is no one to take hold of her hand
among all the offspring she has brought up.
19
These two things have happened to you:
devastation and destruction,
famine and sword.
Who will grieve for you?
How can I comfort you?
New Living Translation
Chapter 51
13
Yet you have forgotten the
Lord
, your Creator,
the one who stretched out the sky like a canopy
and laid the foundations of the earth.
Will you remain in constant dread of human oppressors?
Will you continue to fear the anger of your enemies?
Where is their fury and anger now?
It is gone!
14
Soon all you captives will be released!
Imprisonment, starvation, and death will not be your fate!
15
For I am the
Lord
your God,
who stirs up the sea, causing its waves to roar.
My name is the
Lord
of Heaven’s Armies.
16
And I have put my words in your mouth
and hidden you safely in my hand.
I stretched out the sky like a canopy
and laid the foundations of the earth.
I am the one who says to Israel,
‘You are my people!’'
17
Wake up, wake up, O Jerusalem!
You have drunk the cup of the
Lord
’s fury.
You have drunk the cup of terror,
tipping out its last drops.
18
Not one of your children is left alive
to take your hand and guide you.
19
These two calamities have fallen on you:
desolation and destruction, famine and war.
And who is left to sympathize with you?
Who is left to comfort you?

14
He who is bowed down shall speedily be released;
he shall not die and go down to the pit,
