Isaiah 40:2-10
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 40
2
'Speak kindly to Jerusalem;
And call out to her, that her warfare has ended,
That her guilt has been removed,
That she has received of the
Lord
’S hand
Double for all her sins.'
3
The voice of one calling out,
'Clear the way for the
Lord
in the wilderness;
Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4
Let every valley be lifted up,
And every mountain and hill be made low;
And let the uneven ground become a plain,
And the rugged terrain a broad valley;
5
Then the glory of the
Lord
will be revealed,
And all flesh will see
it
together;
For the mouth of the
Lord
has spoken.'
6
A voice says, 'Call out.'
Then he answered, 'What shall I call out?'
All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field.
7
The grass withers, the flower fades,
When the breath of the
Lord
blows upon it;
The people are indeed grass!
8
The grass withers, the flower fades,
But the word of our God stands forever.
9
Go up on a high mountain,
Zion, messenger of good news,
Raise your voice forcefully,
Jerusalem, messenger of good news;
Raise
it
up, do not fear.
Say to the cities of Judah,
'Here is your God!'
10
Behold, the Lord
God
will come with might,
With His arm ruling for Him.
Behold, His compensation is with Him,
And His reward before Him.
King James Version
Chapter 40
2
Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the
Lord
'S hand double for all her sins.
3
The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the
Lord
, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4
Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:
5
And the glory of the
Lord
shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the
Lord
hath spoken it.
6
The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:
7
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the
Lord
bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.
8
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
9
O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!
10
Behold, the Lord
God
will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 40
2
"Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and announce to her
that her time of forced labor is over,
her iniquity has been pardoned,
and she has received from the
Lord
’s hand
double for all her sins."
3
A voice of one crying out:
Prepare the way of the
Lord
in the wilderness;
make a straight highway for our God in the desert.
4
Every valley will be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill will be leveled;
the uneven ground will become smooth
and the rough places, a plain.
5
And the glory of the
Lord
will appear,
and all humanity together will see it,
for the mouth of the
Lord
has spoken.
6
A voice was saying, "Cry out!"
Another said, "What should I cry out?"
"All humanity is grass,
and all its goodness is like the flower of the field.
7
The grass withers, the flowers fade
when the breath of the
Lord
blows on them;
indeed, the people are grass.
8
The grass withers, the flowers fade,
but the word of our God remains forever."
9
Zion, herald of good news,
go up on a high mountain.
Jerusalem, herald of good news,
raise your voice loudly.
Raise it, do not be afraid!
Say to the cities of Judah,
"Here is your God!"
10
See, the Lord
God
comes with strength,
and his power establishes his rule.
His wages are with him,
and his reward accompanies him.
New Living Translation
Chapter 40
2
'Speak tenderly to Jerusalem.
Tell her that her sad days are gone
and her sins are pardoned.
Yes, the
Lord
has punished her twice over
for all her sins.'
3
Listen! It’s the voice of someone shouting,
'Clear the way through the wilderness
for the
Lord
!
Make a straight highway through the wasteland
for our God!
4
Fill in the valleys,
and level the mountains and hills.
Straighten the curves,
and smooth out the rough places.
5
Then the glory of the
Lord
will be revealed,
and all people will see it together.
The
Lord
has spoken!'
6
A voice said, 'Shout!'
I asked, 'What should I shout?'
'Shout that people are like the grass.
Their beauty fades as quickly
as the flowers in a field.
7
The grass withers and the flowers fade
beneath the breath of the
Lord
.
And so it is with people.
8
The grass withers and the flowers fade,
but the word of our God stands forever.'
9
O Zion, messenger of good news,
shout from the mountaintops!
Shout it louder, O Jerusalem.
Shout, and do not be afraid.
Tell the towns of Judah,
'Your God is coming!'
10
Yes, the Sovereign
Lord
is coming in power.
He will rule with a powerful arm.
See, he brings his reward with him as he comes.
