Isaiah 26:8-21
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 26
8
Indeed,
while following
the way of Your judgments,
Lord
,
We have waited for You eagerly;
Your name, and remembering You, is the desire of
our
souls.
9
At night my soul longs for You,
Indeed, my spirit within me seeks You diligently;
For when the earth experiences Your judgments,
The inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.
10
Though
the wicked person is shown compassion,
He does not learn righteousness;
He deals unjustly in the land of uprightness,
And does not perceive the majesty of the
Lord
.
11
Lord
, Your hand is lifted up,
yet
they do not see it.
They see
Your
zeal for the people and are put to shame;
Indeed, fire will devour Your enemies.
12
Lord
, You will establish peace for us,
Since You have also performed for us all our works.
13
Lord
, our God, other masters besides You have ruled us;
But
through You alone we confess Your name.
14
The dead will not live, the departed spirits will not rise;
Therefore You have punished and destroyed them,
And You have eliminated all remembrance of them.
15
You have increased the nation,
Lord
,
You have increased the nation, You are glorified;
You have extended all the borders of the land.
16
Lord
, they sought You in distress;
They could only whisper a prayer,
Your discipline was upon them.
17
As the pregnant woman approaches
the time
to give birth,
She writhes
and
cries out in her labor pains;
This is how we were before You,
Lord
.
18
We were pregnant, we writhed
in labor,
We gave birth, as it seems,
only
to wind.
We could not accomplish deliverance for the earth,
Nor were inhabitants of the world born.
19
Your dead will live;
Their corpses will rise.
You who lie in the dust, awake and shout for joy,
For your dew
is as
the dew of the dawn,
And the earth will give birth to the departed spirits.
20
Come, my people, enter your rooms
And close your doors behind you;
Hide for a little while
Until indignation runs
its
course.
21
For behold, the
Lord
is about to come out from His place
To punish the inhabitants of the earth for their wrongdoing;
And the earth will reveal her bloodshed
And will no longer cover her slain.
King James Version
Chapter 26
8
Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O
Lord
, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee.
9
With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
10
Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the
Lord
.
11
Lord
, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see, and be ashamed for their envy at the people; yea, the fire of thine enemies shall devour them.
12
Lord
, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us.
13
O
Lord
our God, other lords beside thee have had dominion over us: but by thee only will we make mention of thy name.
14
They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.
15
Thou hast increased the nation, O
Lord
, thou hast increased the nation: thou art glorified: thou hadst removed it far unto all the ends of the earth.
16
Lord
, in trouble have they visited thee, they poured out a prayer when thy chastening was upon them.
17
Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O
Lord
.
18
We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.
19
Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.
20
Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.
21
For, behold, the
Lord
cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

Chapter 26
8
Yes,
Lord
, we wait for you
in the path of your judgments.
Our desire is for your name and renown.
9
I long for you in the night;
yes, my spirit within me diligently seeks you,
for when your judgments are in the land,
the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
10
But if the wicked man is shown favor,
he does not learn righteousness.
In a righteous land he acts unjustly
and does not see the majesty of the
Lord
.
11
Lord
, your hand is lifted up to take action,
but they do not see it.
Let them see your zeal for your people
and be put to shame.
Let fire consume your adversaries.
12
Lord
, you will establish peace for us,
for you have also done all our work for us.
13
Lord
our God, lords other than you have owned us,
but we remember your name alone.
14
The dead do not live;
departed spirits do not rise up.
Indeed, you have punished and destroyed them;
you have wiped out all memory of them.
15
You have added to the nation,
Lord
.
You have added to the nation; you are honored.
You have expanded all the borders of the land.
16
Lord
, they went to you in their distress;
they poured out whispered prayers
because your discipline fell on them.
17
As a pregnant woman about to give birth
writhes and cries out in her pains,
so we were before you,
Lord
.
18
We became pregnant, we writhed in pain;
we gave birth to wind.
We have won no victories on earth,
and the earth’s inhabitants have not fallen.
19
Your dead will live; their bodies will rise.
Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust!
For you will be covered with the morning dew,
and the earth will bring out the departed spirits.
20
Go, my people, enter your rooms
and close your doors behind you.
Hide for a little while until the wrath has passed.
21
For look, the
Lord
is coming from his place
to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity.
The earth will reveal the blood shed on it
and will no longer conceal her slain.
New Living Translation
Chapter 26
8
Lord
, we show our trust in you by obeying your laws;
our heart’s desire is to glorify your name.
9
In the night I search for you;
in the morning I earnestly seek you.
For only when you come to judge the earth
will people learn what is right.
10
Your kindness to the wicked
does not make them do good.
Although others do right, the wicked keep doing wrong
and take no notice of the
Lord
’s majesty.
11
O
Lord
, they pay no attention to your upraised fist.
Show them your eagerness to defend your people.
Then they will be ashamed.
Let your fire consume your enemies.
12
Lord
, you will grant us peace;
all we have accomplished is really from you.
13
O
Lord
our God, others have ruled us,
but you alone are the one we worship.
14
Those we served before are dead and gone.
Their departed spirits will never return!
You attacked them and destroyed them,
and they are long forgotten.
15
O
Lord
, you have made our nation great;
yes, you have made us great.
You have extended our borders,
and we give you the glory!
16
Lord
, in distress we searched for you.
We prayed beneath the burden of your discipline.
17
Just as a pregnant woman
writhes and cries out in pain as she gives birth,
so were we in your presence,
Lord
.
18
We, too, writhe in agony,
but nothing comes of our suffering.
We have not given salvation to the earth,
nor brought life into the world.
19
But those who die in the
Lord
will live;
their bodies will rise again!
Those who sleep in the earth
will rise up and sing for joy!
For your life-giving light will fall like dew
on your people in the place of the dead!
20
Go home, my people,
and lock your doors!
Hide yourselves for a little while
until the
Lord
’s anger has passed.
21
Look! The
Lord
is coming from heaven
to punish the people of the earth for their sins.
The earth will no longer hide those who have been killed.
They will be brought out for all to see.

8
Yes,
Lord

we wait for you;

are the desire of our hearts.

but they do not see it.

12
Lord
, you establish peace for us;
all that we have accomplished you have done for us.
13
Lord
our God, other lords besides you have ruled over us,
but your name alone do we honor.

You have enlarged the nation,
Lord

you have enlarged the nation.
You have gained glory for yourself;
you have extended all the borders of the land.
16
