What does Luke 3:30 mean?
Luke presents a genealogy that connects Jesus to Adam, through the line of David (2 Samuel 7:12–16). Included in this list are many famous names. However, most on the list are not the people who made their name famous. Close ancestors of Jesus bore names of much earlier men, such as Joshua, Levi, and Joseph. The only person mentioned so far with any Old Testament presence is Zerubbabel (Luke 3:27; Ezra 3:8–10).Here, the names Simeon, Judah, and Joseph also connect to major figures in the Old Testament, but the men mentioned here are not the same people. Eliakim, as well, is a name seen several times in Jewish Scripture, including a man who served under Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:18).
