The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, 'It is not lawful to put them in the temple treasury, since it is money paid for blood.'

And they conferred together and with the money bought the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers.

And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.

And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.

The chief priests took the silver and said, "It's not permitted to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money."

They conferred together and bought the potter's field with it as a burial place for foreigners.
New Living Translation

The leading priests picked up the coins. 'It wouldn’t be right to put this money in the Temple treasury,' they said, 'since it was payment for murder.'

After some discussion they finally decided to buy the potter’s field, and they made it into a cemetery for foreigners.
