Matthew 27:20-24
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 27
20
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas, and to put Jesus to death.
21
And the governor said to them, 'Which of the two do you want me to release for you?' And they said, 'Barabbas.'
22
Pilate *said to them, 'Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?' They all *said, 'Crucify Him!'
23
But he said, 'Why, what evil has He done?' Yet they kept shouting all the more, saying, 'Crucify Him!'
24
Now when Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, 'I am innocent of this Man’s blood; you yourselves shall see.'
King James Version
Chapter 27
20
But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
21
The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.
22
Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.
23
And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
24
When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 27
20
The chief priests and the elders, however, persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to execute Jesus.
21
The governor asked them, "Which of the two do you want me to release for you?" "Barabbas!" they answered.
22
Pilate asked them, "What should I do then with Jesus, who is called Christ?" They all answered, "Crucify him!"
23
Then he said, "Why? What has he done wrong?" But they kept shouting all the more, "Crucify him!"
24
When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, "I am innocent of this man’s blood. See to it yourselves!"
New Living Translation
Chapter 27
20
Meanwhile, the leading priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas to be released and for Jesus to be put to death.
21
So the governor asked again, 'Which of these two do you want me to release to you?' The crowd shouted back, 'Barabbas!'
22
Pilate responded, 'Then what should I do with Jesus who is called the Messiah?' They shouted back, 'Crucify him!'
23
Why?' Pilate demanded. 'What crime has he committed?' But the mob roared even louder, 'Crucify him!'
24
Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, 'I am innocent of this man’s blood. The responsibility is yours!'
English Standard Version
