Luke 16:21-30
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 16
21
and longing to be fed from the
scraps
which fell from the rich man’s table; not only
that,
the dogs also were coming and licking his sores.
22
Now it happened that the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s arms; and the rich man also died and was buried.
23
And in Hades he raised his eyes, being in torment, and *saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his arms.
24
And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus, so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’
25
But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony.
26
And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set, so that those who want to go over from here to you will not be able, nor will
any people
cross over from there to us.’
27
And he said, ‘Then I request of you, father, that you send him to my father’s house—
28
for I have five brothers—in order that he may warn them, so that they will not come to this place of torment as well.’
29
But Abraham *said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’
30
But he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’
King James Version
Chapter 16
21
And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
22
And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23
And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24
And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
25
But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
26
And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
27
Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:
28
For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
29
Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
30
And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

Chapter 16
21
He longed to be filled with what fell from the rich man’s table, but instead the dogs would come and lick his sores.
22
One day the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.
23
And being in torment in Hades, he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off, with Lazarus at his side.
24
‘Father Abraham!’ he called out, ‘Have mercy on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this flame!’
25
"‘Son,’ Abraham said, ‘remember that during your life you received your good things, just as Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here, while you are in agony.
26
Besides all this, a great chasm has been fixed between us and you, so that those who want to pass over from here to you cannot; neither can those from there cross over to us.’
27
"‘Father,’ he said, ‘then I beg you to send him to my father’s house—
28
because I have five brothers—to warn them, so they won’t also come to this place of torment.’
29
"But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.’
30
"‘No, father Abraham,’ he said. ‘But if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
New Living Translation
Chapter 16
21
As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man’s table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores.
22
Finally, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the heavenly banquet. The rich man also died and was buried,
23
and he went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side.
24
The rich man shouted, ‘Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.’
25
But Abraham said to him, ‘Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish.
26
And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you from here, and no one can cross over to us from there.’
27
Then the rich man said, ‘Please, Father Abraham, at least send him to my father’s home.
28
For I have five brothers, and I want him to warn them so they don’t end up in this place of torment.’
29
But Abraham said, ‘Moses and the prophets have warned them. Your brothers can read what they wrote.’
30
The rich man replied, ‘No, Father Abraham! But if someone is sent to them from the dead, then they will repent of their sins and turn to God.’
