Luke 11:38-49
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 11
38When the Pharisee saw this, he was surprised that Jesus had not first ceremonially washed before the meal. 39But the Lord said to him, 'Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish; but your inside is full of greed and wickedness. 40You foolish ones, did He who made the outside not make the inside also? 41But give that which is within as a charitable gift, and then all things are clean for you.
42But woe to you Pharisees! For you pay tithes of mint, rue, and every kind of garden herb, and yet you ignore justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.
43Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the seat of honor in the synagogues and personal greetings in the marketplaces.
44Woe to you! For you are like unseen tombs, and the people who walk over them are unaware of it.'
45One of the lawyers *said to Him in reply, 'Teacher, when You say these things, You insult us too.'
46But He said, 'Woe to you lawyers as well! For you load people with burdens that are hard to bear, while you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers.
47Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them.
48So you are witnesses and you approve of the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their tombs.
49For this reason also, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill, and some they will persecute,

Chapter 11
38And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner. 39And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. 40Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also? 41But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you. 42But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 43Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. 44Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them. 45Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also. 46And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. 47Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. 48Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. 49Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute:Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 11
38When the Pharisee saw this, he was amazed that he did not first perform the ritual washing before dinner. 39But the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and evil. 40Fools! Didn't he who made the outside make the inside too? 41But give from what is within to the poor, and then everything is clean for you.
47"Woe to you! You build tombs for the prophets, and your fathers killed them.
48Therefore, you are witnesses that you approve the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their monuments.
49Because of this, the wisdom of God said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,'

Chapter 11
38His host was amazed to see that he sat down to eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony required by Jewish custom. 39Then the Lord said to him, 'You Pharisees are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy — full of greed and wickedness! 40Fools! Didn’t God make the inside as well as the outside? 41So clean the inside by giving gifts to the poor, and you will be clean all over.
43What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you love to sit in the seats of honor in the synagogues and receive respectful greetings as you walk in the marketplaces.
44Yes, what sorrow awaits you! For you are like hidden graves in a field. People walk over them without knowing the corruption they are stepping on.'
46Yes,' said Jesus, 'what sorrow also awaits you experts in religious law! For you crush people with unbearable religious demands, and you never lift a finger to ease the burden.
47What sorrow awaits you! For you build monuments for the prophets your own ancestors killed long ago.
48But in fact, you stand as witnesses who agree with what your ancestors did. They killed the prophets, and you join in their crime by building the monuments!
49This is what God in his wisdom said about you: ‘I will send prophets and apostles to them, but they will kill some and persecute the others.’

43Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.
44Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”
45One of the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.”
46And he said, “Woe to you lawyers also! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.

39Then the Lord said to him, 'Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.
40You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?
41But now as for what is inside you--be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.
47Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them.
48So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.
49Because of this, God in his wisdom said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.'
