Luke 11:39-43
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 11
39
But the Lord said to him, 'Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish; but your inside is full of greed and wickedness.
40
You foolish ones, did He who made the outside not make the inside also?
41
But give that which is within as a charitable gift, and then all things are clean for you.
42
But woe to you Pharisees! For you pay tithes of mint, rue, and every
kind of
garden herb, and
yet
you ignore justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.
43
Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the seat of honor in the synagogues and personal greetings in the marketplaces.
King James Version
Chapter 11
39
And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.
40
Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?
41
But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.
42
But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
43
Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 11
39
But the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and evil.
40
Fools! Didn’t he who made the outside make the inside too?
41
But give from what is within to the poor, and then everything is clean for you.
42
"But woe to you Pharisees! You give a tenth of mint, rue, and every kind of herb, and you bypass justice and love for God. These things you should have done without neglecting the others.
43
"Woe to you Pharisees! You love the front seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.
New Living Translation
Chapter 11
39
Then the Lord said to him, 'You Pharisees are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy — full of greed and wickedness!
40
Fools! Didn’t God make the inside as well as the outside?
41
So clean the inside by giving gifts to the poor, and you will be clean all over.
42
What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore justice and the love of God. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.
43
What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you love to sit in the seats of honor in the synagogues and receive respectful greetings as you walk in the marketplaces.
English Standard Version
Chapter 11
39
And the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.
40
You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also?
41
But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.
42
"But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
43
Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.
New International Version
Chapter 11
39
Then the Lord said to him, "Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.
40
You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?
41
But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.
42
"Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.
43
"Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.
New King James Version
Chapter 11
39
Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness.
40
Foolish ones! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also?
41
But rather give alms of such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you.
42
“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.
43
Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.
