John 4:7-22
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 4
7A woman of Samaria *came to draw water. Jesus *said to her, 'Give Me a drink.' 8For His disciples had gone away to the city to buy food. 9So the Samaritan woman *said to Him, 'How is it that You, though You are a Jew, are asking me for a drink, though I am a Samaritan woman?' (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) 10Jesus replied to her, 'If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.' 11She *said to Him, 'Sir, You have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do You get this living water? 12You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well and drank of it himself, and his sons and his cattle?' 13Jesus answered and said to her, 'Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again; 14but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never be thirsty; but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life.'
15The woman *said to Him, 'Sir, give me this water so that I will not be thirsty, nor come all the way here to draw water.'
16He *said to her, 'Go, call your husband and come here.'
17The woman answered and said to Him, 'I have no husband.' Jesus *said to her, 'You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’;
18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this which you have said is true.'
19The woman *said to Him, 'Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
20Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and yet you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one must worship.'
21Jesus *said to her, 'Believe Me, woman, that a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
22You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.

Chapter 4
7There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. 8For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) 9Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. 10Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? 12Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
13Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
15The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
17The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
18For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
19The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

Chapter 4
7A woman of Samaria came to draw water. "Give me a drink," Jesus said to her, 8because his disciples had gone into town to buy food.
11"Sir," said the woman, "you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do you get this ‘living water’?
12You aren’t greater than our father Jacob, are you? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and livestock."
13Jesus said, "Everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again.
14But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again. In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up in him for eternal life."
17"I don’t have a husband," she answered. "You have correctly said, ‘I don’t have a husband,’" Jesus said.
18"For you’ve had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true."
New Living Translation
Chapter 4
7Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, 'Please give me a drink.' 8He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.
11But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,' she said, 'and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water?
12And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?'
13Jesus replied, 'Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again.
14But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.'
17I don’t have a husband,' the woman replied. Jesus said, 'You’re right! You don’t have a husband —
18for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!'
