to whom it was said, 'THROUGH ISAAC YOUR DESCENDANTS SHALL BE NAMED.'

He considered that God is able to raise
people
even from the dead, from which he also received him back as a type.

able to raise
him
up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

the one to whom it had been said, Your offspring will be traced through Isaac.

He considered God to be able even to raise someone from the dead; therefore, he received him back, figuratively speaking.
New Living Translation

even though God had told him, 'Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.'

Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead.
