Genesis 4:8-18
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 4
8
Cain talked to his brother Abel; and it happened that when they were in the field Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.
9
Then the
Lord
said to Cain, 'Where is Abel your brother?' And he said, 'I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?'
10
Then He said, 'What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying out to Me from the ground.
11
Now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
12
When you cultivate the ground, it will no longer yield its strength to you; you will be a wanderer and a drifter on the earth.'
13
Cain said to the
Lord
, 'My punishment is too great to endure!
14
Behold, You have driven me this day from the face of the ground; and I will be hidden from Your face, and I will be a wanderer and a drifter on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.'
15
So the
Lord
said to him, 'Therefore whoever kills Cain, vengeance will be taken on him seven times
as much.
' And the
Lord
placed a mark on Cain, so that no one finding him would kill him.
16
Then Cain left the presence of the
Lord
, and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17
Cain had relations with his wife and she conceived, and gave birth to Enoch; and
Cain
built a city, and named the city Enoch, after the name of his son.
18
Now to Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech.

Chapter 4
8
And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
9
And the
Lord
said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?
10
And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.
11
And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;
12
When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
13
And Cain said unto the
Lord
, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
14
Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.
15
And the
Lord
said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the
Lord
set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
16
And Cain went out from the presence of the
Lord
, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
17
And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.
18
And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.

Chapter 4
8
Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let’s go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
9
Then the
Lord
said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don’t know," he replied. "Am I my brother’s guardian?"
10
Then he said, "What have you done? Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground!
11
So now you are cursed, alienated from the ground that opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood you have shed.
12
If you work the ground, it will never again give you its yield. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth."
13
But Cain answered the
Lord
, "My punishment is too great to bear!
14
Since you are banishing me today from the face of the earth, and I must hide from your presence and become a restless wanderer on the earth, whoever finds me will kill me."
15
Then the
Lord
replied to him, "In that case, whoever kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over." And he placed a mark on Cain so that whoever found him would not kill him.
16
Then Cain went out from the
Lord
’s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17
Cain was intimate with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain became the builder of a city, and he named the city Enoch after his son.
18
Irad was born to Enoch, Irad fathered Mehujael, Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech.

Chapter 4
8
One day Cain suggested to his brother, 'Let’s go out into the fields.' And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother, Abel, and killed him.
9
Afterward the
Lord
asked Cain, 'Where is your brother? Where is Abel?' 'I don’t know,' Cain responded. 'Am I my brother’s guardian?'
10
But the
Lord
said, 'What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground!
11
Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has swallowed your brother’s blood.
12
No longer will the ground yield good crops for you, no matter how hard you work! From now on you will be a homeless wanderer on the earth.'
13
Cain replied to the
Lord
, 'My punishment is too great for me to bear!
14
You have banished me from the land and from your presence; you have made me a homeless wanderer. Anyone who finds me will kill me!'
15
The
Lord
replied, 'No, for I will give a sevenfold punishment to anyone who kills you.' Then the
Lord
put a mark on Cain to warn anyone who might try to kill him.
16
So Cain left the
Lord
’s presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17
Cain had sexual relations with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Then Cain founded a city, which he named Enoch, after his son.
18
Enoch had a son named Irad. Irad became the father of Mehujael. Mehujael became the father of Methushael. Methushael became the father of Lamech.
