Genesis 25:24-31
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 25
24
When her days
leading
to the delivery were at an end, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25
Now the first came out red, all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau.
26
Afterward his brother came out with his hand holding on to Esau’s heel, so he was named Jacob; and Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them.
27
When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field; but Jacob was a civilized man, living in tents.
28
Now Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for game; but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29
When Jacob had cooked a stew
one day,
Esau came in from the field and he was exhausted;
30
and Esau said to Jacob, 'Please let me have a mouthful of that red stuff there, for I am exhausted.' Therefore he was called Edom
by
name.
31
But Jacob said, 'First sell me your birthright.'
King James Version
Chapter 25
24
And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25
And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.
26
And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
27
And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
28
And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29
And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
30
And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
31
And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 25
24
When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb.
25
The first one came out red-looking, covered with hair like a fur coat, and they named him Esau.
26
After this, his brother came out grasping Esau’s heel with his hand. So he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.
27
When the boys grew up, Esau became an expert hunter, an outdoorsman, but Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home.
28
Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for wild game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29
Once when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the field exhausted.
30
He said to Jacob, "Let me eat some of that red stuff, because I’m exhausted." That is why he was also named Edom.
31
Jacob replied, "First sell me your birthright."
New Living Translation
Chapter 25
24
And when the time came to give birth, Rebekah discovered that she did indeed have twins!
25
The first one was very red at birth and covered with thick hair like a fur coat. So they named him Esau.
26
Then the other twin was born with his hand grasping Esau’s heel. So they named him Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born.
27
As the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter. He was an outdoorsman, but Jacob had a quiet temperament, preferring to stay at home.
28
Isaac loved Esau because he enjoyed eating the wild game Esau brought home, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29
One day when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau arrived home from the wilderness exhausted and hungry.
30
Esau said to Jacob, 'I’m starved! Give me some of that red stew!' (This is how Esau got his other name, Edom, which means 'red.')
31
All right,' Jacob replied, 'but trade me your rights as the firstborn son.'
English Standard Version
Chapter 25
24
When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb.
25
The first came out red, all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau.
26
Afterward his brother came out with his hand holding Esau 's heel, so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.
27
When the boys grew up, Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents.
28
Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29
Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted.
30
And Esau said to Jacob, "Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!" (Therefore his name was called Edom. )
31
Jacob said, "Sell me your birthright now."
New International Version
Chapter 25
24
When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb.
25
The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau.
26
After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.
27
The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open country, while Jacob was content to stay at home among the tents.
28
Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29
Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished.
30
He said to Jacob, "Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!" (That is why he was also called Edom. )
31
Jacob replied, "First sell me your birthright."
New King James Version
Chapter 25
24
So when her days were fulfilled
for her
to give birth, indeed
there were
twins in her womb.
25
And the first came out red.
He was
like a hairy garment all over; so they called his name Esau.
26
Afterward his brother came out, and his hand took hold of Esau’s heel; so his name was called Jacob. Isaac
was
sixty years old when she bore them.
27
So the boys grew. And Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field; but Jacob was a mild man, dwelling in tents.
28
And Isaac loved Esau because he ate
of his
game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29
Now Jacob cooked a stew; and Esau came in from the field, and he
was
weary.
30
And Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with that same red
stew,
for I
am
weary.” Therefore his name was called Edom.
31
But Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright as of this day.”
