Exodus 20:18-22
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 20
18
And all the people were watching
and hearing
the thunder and the lightning flashes, and the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw
it all,
they trembled and stood at a distance.
19
Then they said to Moses, 'Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but do not have God speak to us, or we will die!'
20
However, Moses said to the people, 'Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may remain with you, so that you will not sin.'
21
So the people stood at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God
was.
22
Then the
Lord
said to Moses, 'This is what you shall say to the sons of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven.
King James Version
Chapter 20
18
And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.
19
And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.
20
And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.
21
And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.
22
And the
Lord
said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.
Christian Standard Bible

19
"You speak to us, and we will listen," they said to Moses, "but don’t let God speak to us, or we will die."
20
Moses responded to the people, "Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, so that you will fear him and will not sin."
21
And the people remained standing at a distance as Moses approached the total darkness where God was.
22
Then the
Lord
told Moses, "This is what you are to say to the Israelites: You have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven.

And they said to Moses, 'You speak to us, and we will listen. But don’t let God speak directly to us, or we will die!'
20
Don’t be afraid,' Moses answered them, 'for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!'
21
As the people stood in the distance, Moses approached the dark cloud where God was.
22
And the
Lord
said to Moses, 'Say this to the people of Israel: You saw for yourselves that I spoke to you from heaven.
