Daniel 2:7-12
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 2
7
They answered a second time and said, 'Let the king tell the dream to his servants, and we will declare the interpretation.'
8
The king replied, 'I know for certain that you are trying to buy time, because you have perceived that the command from me is firm,
9
that if you do not make the dream known to me, there is only one decree for you. For you have agreed together to speak lying and corrupt words before me until the situation is changed; therefore tell me the dream, so that I may know that you can declare to me its interpretation.'
10
The Chaldeans answered the king and said, 'There is no person on earth who could declare the matter to the king, because no great king or ruler has
ever
asked anything like this of any soothsayer priest, sorcerer, or Chaldean.
11
Moreover, the thing which the king demands is difficult, and there is no one else who could declare it to the king except gods, whose dwelling place is not with
mortal
flesh.'
12
Because of this, the king became angry and extremely furious, and he gave orders to kill all the wise men of Babylon.
King James Version
Chapter 2
7
They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation of it.
8
The king answered and said, I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me.
9
But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof.
10
The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king's matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean.
11
And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.
12
For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 2
7
They answered a second time, "May the king tell the dream to his servants, and we will make known the interpretation."
8
The king replied, "I know for certain you are trying to gain some time, because you see that my word is final.
9
If you don’t tell me the dream, there is one decree for you. You have conspired to tell me something false or fraudulent until the situation changes. So tell me the dream and I will know you can give me its interpretation."
10
The Chaldeans answered the king, "No one on earth can make known what the king requests. Consequently, no king, however great and powerful, has ever asked anything like this of any magician, medium, or Chaldean.
11
What the king is asking is so difficult that no one can make it known to him except the gods, whose dwelling is not with mortals."
12
Because of this, the king became violently angry and gave orders to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.
New Living Translation
Chapter 2
7
They said again, 'Please, Your Majesty. Tell us the dream, and we will tell you what it means.'
8
The king replied, 'I know what you are doing! You’re stalling for time because you know I am serious when I say,
9
‘If you don’t tell me the dream, you are doomed.’ So you have conspired to tell me lies, hoping I will change my mind. But tell me the dream, and then I’ll know that you can tell me what it means.'
10
The astrologers replied to the king, 'No one on earth can tell the king his dream! And no king, however great and powerful, has ever asked such a thing of any magician, enchanter, or astrologer!
11
The king’s demand is impossible. No one except the gods can tell you your dream, and they do not live here among people.'
12
The king was furious when he heard this, and he ordered that all the wise men of Babylon be executed.
English Standard Version
Chapter 2
7
They answered a second time and said, "Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show its interpretation."
8
The king answered and said, "I know with certainty that you are trying to gain time, because you see that the word from me is firm —
9
if you do not make the dream known to me, there is but one sentence for you. You have agreed to speak lying and corrupt words before me till the times change. Therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can show me its interpretation."
10
The Chaldeans answered the king and said, "There is not a man on earth who can meet the king 's demand, for no great and powerful king has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or Chaldean.
11
The thing that the king asks is difficult, and no one can show it to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh."
12
Because of this the king was angry and very furious, and commanded that all the wise men of Babylon be destroyed.
New International Version
Chapter 2
7
Once more they replied, "Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will interpret it."
8
Then the king answered, "I am certain that you are trying to gain time, because you realize that this is what I have firmly decided:
9
If you do not tell me the dream, there is only one penalty for you. You have conspired to tell me misleading and wicked things, hoping the situation will change. So then, tell me the dream, and I will know that you can interpret it for me."
10
The astrologers answered the king, "There is no one on earth who can do what the king asks! No king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or astrologer.
11
What the king asks is too difficult. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods, and they do not live among humans."
12
This made the king so angry and furious that he ordered the execution of all the wise men of Babylon.
New King James Version
Chapter 2
7
They answered again and said, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will give its interpretation.”
8
The king answered and said, “I know for certain that you would gain time, because you see that my decision is firm:
9
if you do not make known the dream to me,
there is only
one decree for you! For you have agreed to speak lying and corrupt words before me till the time has changed. Therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can give me its interpretation.”
10
The Chaldeans answered the king, and said, “There is not a man on earth who can tell the king’s matter; therefore no king, lord, or ruler has
ever
asked such things of any magician, astrologer, or Chaldean.
11
It is
a difficult thing that the king requests, and there is no other who can tell it to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.”
12
For this reason the king was angry and very furious, and gave the command to destroy all the wise
men
of Babylon.
