Daniel 1:8-12
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 1
8
But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s choice food or with the wine which he drank; so he sought
permission
from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself.
9
Now God granted Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the commander of the officials.
10
The commander of the officials said to Daniel, 'I am afraid of my lord the king, who has allotted your food and your drink; for why should he see your faces looking gaunt in comparison to the youths who are your own age? Then you would make me forfeit my head to the king.'
11
But Daniel said to the overseer whom the commander of the officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12
Please put your servants to the test for ten days, and let us be given some vegetables to eat and water to drink.
King James Version
Chapter 1
8
But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9
Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
10
And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.
11
Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12
Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 1
8
Daniel determined that he would not defile himself with the king’s food or with the wine he drank. So he asked permission from the chief eunuch not to defile himself.
9
God had granted Daniel kindness and compassion from the chief eunuch,
10
yet he said to Daniel, "I fear my lord the king, who assigned your food and drink. What if he sees your faces looking thinner than the other young men your age? You would endanger my life with the king."
11
So Daniel said to the guard whom the chief eunuch had assigned to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12
"Please test your servants for ten days. Let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink.
New Living Translation
Chapter 1
8
But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods.
9
Now God had given the chief of staff both respect and affection for Daniel.
10
But he responded, 'I am afraid of my lord the king, who has ordered that you eat this food and wine. If you become pale and thin compared to the other youths your age, I am afraid the king will have me beheaded.'
11
Daniel spoke with the attendant who had been appointed by the chief of staff to look after Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
12
Please test us for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water,' Daniel said.
English Standard Version
Chapter 1
8
But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king 's food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.
9
And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs,
10
and the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, "I fear my lord the king, who assigned your food and your drink; for why should he see that you were in worse condition than the youths who are of your own age? So you would endanger my head with the king."
11
Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had assigned over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12
"Test your servants for ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink.
New International Version
Chapter 1
8
But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.
9
Now God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel,
10
but the official told Daniel, "I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you."
11
Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah,
12
"Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink.
New King James Version
Chapter 1
8
But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
9
Now God had brought Daniel into the favor and goodwill of the chief of the eunuchs.
10
And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and drink. For why should he see your faces looking worse than the young men who
are
your age? Then you would endanger my head before the king.”
11
So Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
12
“Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink.
