1 Kings 11:1-8
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 11
1
Now King Solomon loved many foreign women along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian,
and
Hittite women,
2
from the nations of which the
Lord
had said to the sons of Israel, 'You shall not associate with them, nor shall they associate with you; they will certainly turn your heart away to follow their gods.' Solomon clung to these in love.
3
He had seven hundred wives,
who were
princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned his heart away.
4
For when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away to follow other gods; and his heart was not wholly devoted to the
Lord
his God, as the heart of his father David
had been.
5
For Solomon became a follower of Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and of Milcom the abhorrent idol of the Ammonites.
6
So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the
Lord
, and did not follow the
Lord
fully, as his father David
had done.
7
Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh, the abhorrent idol of Moab, on the mountain that is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abhorrent idol of the sons of Ammon.
8
He also did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.
King James Version
Chapter 11
1
But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites;
2
Of the nations concerning which the
Lord
said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.
3
And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart.
4
For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the
Lord
his God, as was the heart of David his father.
5
For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.
6
And Solomon did evil in the sight of the
Lord
, and went not fully after the
Lord
, as did David his father.
7
Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon.
8
And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 11
1
King Solomon loved many foreign women in addition to Pharaoh’s daughter: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women
2
from the nations about which the
Lord
had told the Israelites, "You must not intermarry with them, and they must not intermarry with you, because they will turn your heart away to follow their gods." To these women Solomon was deeply attached in love.
3
He had seven hundred wives who were princesses and three hundred who were concubines, and they turned his heart away.
4
When Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away to follow other gods. He was not wholeheartedly devoted to the
Lord
his God, as his father David had been.
5
Solomon followed Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom, the abhorrent idol of the Ammonites.
6
Solomon did what was evil in the
Lord
’s sight, and unlike his father David, he did not remain loyal to the
Lord
.
7
At that time, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh, the abhorrent idol of Moab, and for Milcom, the abhorrent idol of the Ammonites, on the hill across from Jerusalem.
8
He did the same for all his foreign wives, who were burning incense and offering sacrifices to their gods.
New Living Translation
Chapter 11
1
Now King Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides Pharaoh’s daughter, he married women from Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon, and from among the Hittites.
2
The
Lord
had clearly instructed the people of Israel, 'You must not marry them, because they will turn your hearts to their gods.' Yet Solomon insisted on loving them anyway.
3
He had 700 wives of royal birth and 300 concubines. And in fact, they did turn his heart away from the
Lord
.
4
In Solomon’s old age, they turned his heart to worship other gods instead of being completely faithful to the
Lord
his God, as his father, David, had been.
5
Solomon worshiped Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molech, the detestable god of the Ammonites.
6
In this way, Solomon did what was evil in the
Lord
’s sight; he refused to follow the
Lord
completely, as his father, David, had done.
7
On the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, he even built a pagan shrine for Chemosh, the detestable god of Moab, and another for Molech, the detestable god of the Ammonites.
8
Solomon built such shrines for all his foreign wives to use for burning incense and sacrificing to their gods.

Chapter 11
1
King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites.
2
They were from nations about which the
Lord
had told the Israelites, "You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods." Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love.
3
He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray.
4
As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the
Lord
his God, as the heart of David his father had been.
5
He followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites.
6
So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the
Lord
; he did not follow the
Lord
completely, as David his father had done.
7
On a hill east of Jerusalem, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the detestable god of Moab, and for Molek the detestable god of the Ammonites.
8
He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods.
