1 Corinthians 10:23-32
New American Standard Bible
Chapter 10
23
All things are permitted, but not all things are of benefit. All things are permitted, but not all things build
people
up.
24
No one is to seek his own
advantage,
but rather that of his neighbor.
25
Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions, for the sake of conscience;
26
FOR THE EARTH IS THE
Lord
’S, AND ALL IT CONTAINS.
27
If one of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, eat anything that is set before you without asking questions, for the sake of conscience.
28
But if anyone says to you, 'This is meat sacrificed to idols,' do not eat
it,
for the sake of that one who informed
you
and for the sake of conscience;
29
Now
by
'conscience' I do not mean your own, but the other person’s; for why is my freedom judged by another’s conscience?
30
If I partake with thankfulness, why am I slandered about that for which I give thanks?
31
Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all things for the glory of God.
32
Do not offend Jews or Greeks, or the church of God;
King James Version
Chapter 10
23
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
24
Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.
25
Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:
26
For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.
27
If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.
28
But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:
29
Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?
30
For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?
31
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
32
Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:
Christian Standard Bible
Chapter 10
23
"Everything is permissible," but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible," but not everything builds up.
24
No one is to seek his own good, but the good of the other person.
25
Eat everything that is sold in the meat market, without raising questions for the sake of conscience,
26
since
the earth is the Lord’s,
and all that is in it.
27
If any of the unbelievers invites you over and you want to go, eat everything that is set before you, without raising questions for the sake of conscience.
28
But if someone says to you, "This is food from a sacrifice," do not eat it, out of consideration for the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience.
29
I do not mean your own conscience, but the other person’s. For why is my freedom judged by another person’s conscience?
30
If I partake with thanksgiving, why am I criticized because of something for which I give thanks?
31
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.
32
Give no offense to Jews or Greeks or the church of God,
New Living Translation
Chapter 10
23
You say, 'I am allowed to do anything' — but not everything is good for you. You say, 'I am allowed to do anything' — but not everything is beneficial.
24
Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others.
25
So you may eat any meat that is sold in the marketplace without raising questions of conscience.
26
For 'the earth is the
Lord
’s, and everything in it.'
27
If someone who isn’t a believer asks you home for dinner, accept the invitation if you want to. Eat whatever is offered to you without raising questions of conscience.
28
(But suppose someone tells you, 'This meat was offered to an idol.' Don’t eat it, out of consideration for the conscience of the one who told you.
29
It might not be a matter of conscience for you, but it is for the other person.) For why should my freedom be limited by what someone else thinks?
30
If I can thank God for the food and enjoy it, why should I be condemned for eating it?
31
So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
32
Don’t give offense to Jews or Gentiles or the church of God.
English Standard Version
Chapter 10
23
"All things are lawful," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful," but not all things build up.
24
Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.
25
Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience.
26
For "the earth is the Lord 's, and the fullness thereof."
27
If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience.
28
But if someone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience —
29
I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else 's conscience?
30
If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks?
31
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
32
Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God,
New International Version
Chapter 10
23
"I have the right to do anything," you say—but not everything is beneficial. "I have the right to do anything"—but not everything is constructive.
24
No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.
25
Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,
26
for, "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it."
27
If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience.
28
But if someone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.
29
I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another’s conscience?
30
If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?
31
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
32
Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God—
New King James Version
Chapter 10
23
All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.
24
Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s
well-being.
25
Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience’ sake;
26
for “the earth
is
the
Lord
’s, and all its fullness.”
27
If any of those who do not believe invites you
to dinner,
and you desire to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no question for conscience’ sake.
28
But if anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” do not eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for conscience’ sake; for “the earth
is
the
Lord
’s, and all its fullness.”
29
“Conscience,” I say, not your own, but that of the other. For why is my liberty judged by another
man’s
conscience?
30
But if I partake with thanks, why am I evil spoken of for
the food
over which I give thanks?
31
Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
