What does Exodus 16:23 mean?
Israel learned a graphic lesson about obedience when they tried to stockpile God's daily provision of manna (Exodus 16:14–16). Despite being told not to keep any overnight (Exodus 16:19), some did so anyway, and the results were foul (Exodus 16:20). The people are surprised when the sixth morning of the week brings a double portion of manna (Exodus 16:22).Moses explains that the seventh day will be dedicated to rest. Further instructions about "Sabbaths" will come once God gives Israel the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:8–11). For now, the people are simply told that no manna will be provided on the seventh day. They are to rest rather than work (Exodus 16:24–26). What is collected on the sixth day will last, unlike every other day's gathering. Predictably, Some Israelites will ignore this command and provoke an angry response from God (Exodus 16:27–29).
