What does 1 Kings 1:32 mean?
God chose Solomon to succeed his father years ago (1 Chronicles 22:9–10). David agreed and vowed to Bathsheba that her son would be king (1 Kings 1:29–30). Nathan the prophet knows it (1 Kings 1:11–12). Apparently, David's son Adonijah knows it, too (1 Kings 1:10). But David hasn't made it official. When he hears that Adonijah is claiming the throne for himself, David immediately acts.Zadok volunteered to take the ark of the covenant into exile when David fled his traitorous son Absalom (2 Samuel 15:24–29). Nathan seems to be God's designated messenger to David. He announced the Davidic Covenant and confronted David after the king took Bathsheba and murdered Uriah (2 Samuel 7:4–17; 12:1–14). Benaiah commands the Cherethites and Pelethites, David's Cretan and Philistine bodyguards (2 Samuel 8:18).
These three officials refused to ally with Adonijah, and David trusts them with Solomon. They will assemble David's servants, ride Solomon around on David's mule, blow trumpets, and shout, "Long live King Solomon!" (1 Kings 1:33–34).
At this moment, Adonijah and his supporters are just outside the city wall at En-rogel. Solomon will be anointed at Gihon, a spring inside of Jerusalem. When Adonijah's party hears the shouting, and Abiathar's son Jonathan explains what it means, the guests will flee for their lives (1 Kings 1:41–49).
